Lori: Overcoming Tragedy and Hardship of Misfortune...
By missmickee/bookreview
Many thanks and appreciation to author Charlene Wexler for the signed ARC of her book "Lori" for the purpose of this review. The first noticeable thing about this engaging novel, is that it reads somewhat like a memoir that focuses on the life of Lori, who was particularly challenged to deal with many of life adversities. This is Wexler's forth novel.

The story opens in 1970, when Lori marries into a large Northfield Chicago observant Jewish family. Her husband, Jerry Brill worked with his brother in a family business, and Lori was a teacher. Eventually Lori and Jerry had two children, and the difficulties they faced (after profound loss), were largely related to their troubled marriage and dysfunctional family relationships.
The Brill's disowned Ellen, a lesbian daughter/sister. Jerry's mother Shelly was portrayed as rude, controlling and obnoxious. Jerry was conflicted and torn between loyalty to his mother and his wife, and there was little effort to promote a stronger family unity.
Jerry was a functional alcoholic, and although the depth of his emotions weren't fully explored as Lori's, he was just as scarred by grief and loss. One of the greatest accomplishments of the novel was by their son Barry, who was accepted in med school and became a doctor.
Lori's lifelong best friend Adele remained an anchor and support for her after she had a breakdown, following a tragic loss. When Jerry and Lori relocated to Arizona, Lori developed a new friendship with Rain, who had surprising links to Lori's life in Chicago. Jerry and Lori enjoyed a brief loving renewal of their 30 plus year marriage, with Jerry's newfound sobriety.

Another story highlight was Lori's lack of relationship with her cold, distant, rejecting, mother. After her mother's death, Lori's need for greater understanding of her family dynamic took her on a journey abroad to Germany. There she learned of her family history traced to the Holocaust, which involved persecution by the Nazi's, where members of her family perished at Auschwitz. It was unclear if Lori remained observant of her Jewish faith and heritage. As she reached a level of acceptance, Lori moved forward with her life, and rose above the hardship, dysfunction, and misfortune. I couldn't help but wonder just how many bad things could happen to one person.

Charlene Wexler is an award winning novelist, her short stories and essays have appeared in a variety of publications in the US and Great Britain. She lives with her husband in the area of Chicago, Illinois.

A great family saga
By Bill B.
When the genre is family saga, books don't come better than Charlene Wexler's Lori. It's not only the story of a woman who gets stronger and stronger the more adversity she faces, but it takes the reader through the sweeping societal and social changes of the last quarter of the 20th Century. In this way, Lori is a smart, sharp version of Forrest Gump--changes in society are looked at through the lens of her life. Lori also is a female "buddy" book, as the book explores her relationship with her lifelong best friend, Adele, and with a latter-day wild child, Rain. Lori deals with the clash of family cultures, money problems, illness, death, alcoholism, the threat of prison, and even features a twist concerning the Holocaust. But far from a downer, this book is the story of a woman's triumph over adversity. You just don't want to put it down, because you constantly can't believe what happens next. This is a great book for young women to get a taste of what life holds and how to overcome adversity, and for more senior women who can compare Lori's struggles to those of their own lives. This book would make a great miniseries or movie. Charlene Wexler already is an award-winning author, and she's got another triumph in Lori.

WHOPPING FULL-SIZED 20TH CENTURY JOURNEY
By Leigh Podgorski
LORI by Charlene Wexler is a whopping full-sized read, a journey through not only the 20th Century, but also through one woman’s life as she tries to navigate the turbulent waters of a time of great change for women in America. Add to the tumult an alcoholic husband, a daughter courageously fighting a serious illness, and a hidden connection to the Holocaust that unlocks the central mystery of Lori’s life, and you begin to understand the scope of Charlene Wexler’s undertaking.
Lori comes from privilege—that is the privilege of money, but never has she known the true comfort of love and acceptance; her life especially having lacked the warmth of a mother’s love. This has impacted all her days and colored her world—in ways Lori knows and will discover along her journey. Her biggest saving grace from childhood is best friend Adele, a life-long friendship, who later on, with husband Jim forms part of the foursome Lori spends a great deal of her married life with along with husband Jerry. Is it the very power of this friendship that keeps her with her alcoholic husband long past the time she should have stayed? Or is it her own naivet? An inability or refusal to look deeper and “disturb her universe”? These are all questions Lori must face as she travels her uncomfortable journey—a journey that eventually leads her to Rain, another “helper” and another powerful friend, quite opposite to Adele, and one that spurs Lori on to further discovery.
The illness of Lori’s daughter Julie and the impact this has on the family and especially on Lori supplies some of the most evocative and most beautiful writing in the novel. In these sections, the prose flows, sweeping the reader along in these heart-rending passages, making us fervently hope and want it not to be so. But this is life, wondrously rendered.
But Lori continues. She always continues, ungainly, perhaps, even inelegantly, but she moves on. Which is, perhaps, the greatest lesson and triumph of the novel.
Charlene Wexler is an award winning author, and you will find much to cheer in LORI.

Fun Comic About Japanese Cuisine
By Jennifer
This comic actually turned out pretty fun to read. You learn quite a lot about Japanese cuisine and culture while also following the main characters solve dilemmas (food related, of course) and their task of making the "Ultimate Menu" articles for their newspaper.

The only detractor I have for this comic is about how it's published. It's not presented in chronological order, so your not reading from the first chapter; instead your reading chapters picked to fit the theme of the published volume. So you end up with chapters where the art style has improved since its from a later edition.

This also makes it hard to follow the character's personal story arcs. One character for instance is dating a rice cracker maker and then later in the book she's pregnant. The second volume shows the wedding planning for this character, but since that one focuses on saki it's not included in this volume. Its not hard to follow but it is slightly irksome.

oishinbo = omoshiroii
By foodie ronin
The Oishinbo 'a la carte' collections are an excellent way to get your Japanese food fix while reading manga. All the major elements of Japanese cuisine are represented along with some classic stylistic devices - the feud between the older traditional father and rebellious son, love interests, and plenty of showdown battles.

There reaches a point in your development when you're no longer just an otaku young adult, and you can get sick of continuous fantasy battles and power beams and magic etc etc... Oishinbo manages to retain the exciting elements of Manga with more real world content - food, drink, opinion and criticism. It's like a lively debate with your friends over the dinner table on the best food and restaurants

This collection covers the 'basics' of Japanese cuisine, including sashimi, tea and table manners as well as giving some background as to the feud between the protagonist and his father.

Each book also contains a recipe or menu item that is featured in one of the stories, and a personal article from the writer, both of which add to the context of the stories and add to your enjoyment. This edition contains two intriguing sashimi styles I can't wait to try.

Each story informs and entertains. I'm a devoted collector.

Fantastic read for foodies!
By Sibelius
Even the most die-hard of literary 'foodies' will find much delight in this first volume of Tetsu Kariya's comic-book "Oishinbo" series. Forget about the characters and meager, unifying storyline for the time being. The beauty of this series is the sheer amount of detail conveyed in its bite-sized, easily digestible, graphic novel format. Concepts such as what comprises the 'essence' of Japanese cuisine oftentimes gets muddled in erudite and pretentious articulations when presented in text-essay format but here, with simplistic illustration and breezy flow from one panel to another the reader quickly absorbs complex and detailed concepts with very little effort.

This book will certainly appeal to foodies first and foremost. Whether you have a detailed understanding of Japanese cuisine or are a neophyte curious to learn more there is much to be gleaned within for both parties. Do not be turned off just because of its comic format, at 276 pages this book is information dense and you may be surprised to discover the efficiency of the medium in presenting its subject matter.

The #1 New York Times Bestseller

The final installment in the epic Natchez Burning trilogy by Greg Iles

“Natchez Burningis extraordinarily entertaining and fiendishly suspenseful. I defy you to start it and find a way to put it down; as long as it is, I wished it were longer. . . . This is an amazing work of popular fiction.”
—Stephen King

“One of the longest, most successful sustained works of popular fiction in recent memory… Prepare to be surprised. Iles has always been an exceptional storyteller, and he has invested these volumes with an energy and sense of personal urgency that rarely, if ever, falter.”

— Washington Post

The endgame is at hand for Penn Cage, his family, and the enemies bent on destroying them in this revelatory volume in the epic trilogy set in modern-day Natchez, Mississippi—Greg Iles’s epic tale of love and honor, hatred and revenge that explores how the sins of the past continue to haunt the present.

Shattered by grief and dreaming of vengeance, Penn Cage sees his family and his world collapsing around him. The woman he loves is gone, his principles have been irrevocably compromised, and his father, once a paragon of the community that Penn leads as mayor, is about to be tried for the murder of a former lover. Most terrifying of all, Dr. Cage seems bent on self-destruction. Despite Penn's experience as a prosecutor in major murder trials, his father has frozen him out of the trial preparations--preferring to risk dying in prison to revealing the truth of the crime to his son.

During forty years practicing medicine, Tom Cage made himself the most respected and beloved physician in Natchez, Mississippi. But this revered Southern figure has secrets known only to himself and a handful of others. Among them, Tom has a second son, the product of an 1960s affair with his devoted African American nurse, Viola Turner. It is Viola who has been murdered, and her bitter son--Penn's half-brother--who sets in motion the murder case against his father. The resulting investigation exhumes dangerous ghosts from Mississippi's violent past. In some way that Penn cannot fathom, Viola Turner was a nexus point between his father and the Double Eagles, a savage splinter cell of the KKK. More troubling still, the long-buried secrets shared by Dr. Cage and the former Klansmen may hold the key to the most devastating assassinations of the 1960s. The surviving Double Eagles will stop at nothing to keep their past crimes buried, and with the help of some of the most influential men in the state, they seek to ensure that Dr. Cage either takes the fall for them, or takes his secrets to an early grave.

Unable to trust anyone around him--not even his own mother--Penn joins forces with Serenity Butler, a famous young black author who has come to Natchez to write about his father's case. Together, Penn and Serenity battle to crack the Double Eagles and discover the secret history of the Cage family and the South itself, a desperate move that risks the only thing they have left to gamble: their lives.

Mississippi Blood is the enthralling conclusion to a breathtaking trilogy seven years in the making--one that has kept readers on the edge of their seats. With piercing insight, narrative prowess, and a masterful ability to blend history and imagination, Greg Iles illuminates the brutal history of the American South in a highly atmospheric and suspenseful novel that delivers the shocking resolution his fans have eagerly awaited.

The most compelling passages of the novel echo Iles? writer-predecessor from Natchez, Richard Wright . . . Utterly—and chillingly—believable. Epic.” (Clarion-Ledger (Jackson, MS))

I've been an avid reader for over 60 years now, collecting thousands of (primarily) hard cover books written by authors who have impressed me with their story-telling skills, their intelligent plots and sub-plots, their cast of (usually unique) supporting characters, their ability to paint vivid pictures to help immerse me in their stories, their artful presentation of surprising (and sometimes shocking) twists and turns that cause me to reassess and reorganize my thoughts, and the clever use of words and phrases that can cause me to laugh out loud or shed an occasional tear. And it should be easy to see from my first long sentence that my use of "run on" sentences will always prevent me from being a writer.

There are actually very few authors whom I have read (and collected) each and every one of their books. Greg Iles is one of them, along with Dennis Lehane, Stephen King, and James Lee Burke. I have enjoyed the works of several other authors over the years and then stopped reading/collecting them because they kept repeating the same formula (which became stale), their characters remained stagnant and failed to grow, or the impact they were once able to shock and surprise you with had disappeared from their writing. It was obvious in a few cases that "ghost writers" had stepped in and continued with their story lines when they were no longer able to write, which simply affirmed the use of formula writing.

Greg Iles doesn't stand still. He continues to provide intelligent and well-researched stories that are grounded in the history of the Deep South. He doesn't paint a pretty picture with southern ladies and gentlemen, antebellum mansions, garden parties, and good-old-boy politicians. Instead Mr.Iles talks about the problems of the Deep South; the history of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan, the inequality of races, miscegenation, and various hold-outs of people who keep a grip on the old ways even today. His writing is gritty and realistic, impressive and depressing at the same time, and allows his readers to really understand what has happened over the past 150 years. He presents these historic events with passion and insight, excusing few for their actions and holding many accountable for perpetuating barbaric practices.

After having passed through many generations, it is surprising that so many people continue to discriminate against those who were granted freedom from their owners so long ago. Mr. Iles writing periodically points out the places where water fountains had signs on them stating "Whites Only", back doors to stores had empty spaces on them where signs once read "Colored Entrance", and inhumane prisons often held minor offenders for the rest of their lives. It is not a pretty picture but instead points out the realities of racism that others would just as soon forget. It is ugly, it is brutal, and it is amazing that so few managed to take advantage of so many for such a long time. This particular book is not for the faint of heart. No punches are pulled, no words are minced, no stone goes unturned. Be prepared, be warned, and expect to learn some historical truths without any sugar-coating.
,
This is easily a stand-alone novel not requiring the reading of the previous two books in the trilogy. HOWEVER, you will miss two powerful novels that set the stage for the end of this book -- and I wouldn't want you to miss any of its impact.

I'.ve been( patiently ?)waiting for the conclusion of this trilogy, but I believe it was worth it Iles characterizations are such that I feel like if I ran into them on the street I could start an immediate discussion. I do feel like this one ran a little long as the author took forever to peel the world's largest literary onion. Although usually very accurate about legal matters; "the trial" in this book had enough procedural errors to get any verdict overturned multiple times. I find his views of Mississippi and the south really interesting and educational. I find myself hoping to visit Natchez and The Natchez Trace before too long. This series in general and this book in particular have one of the longest and most intricate plots I have seen

Mixed feelings about his book, the third in the trilogy about an interesting story by an excellent author
By Aztec
I debated whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars. I liked the previous two books ( 4 1/2 stars) and couldn't wait to read this one, the last of the 3. I've also enjoyed reading most of Iles' other books. Like the two in the trilogy before it I was ready to give this one 4 to 4 1/2 stars also while reading the book. However, the ending was too abrupt especially considering that this was the end of a trilogy. I'll just say that after having had invested all the time I did in reading this trilogy that I thought the ending was something like: oh, we are out of time, let's cut it off, we don't need to explain this or that or what happened to so and so. Or if we stop here maybe we could even sell one more book relating to the other 3 even though we have told the reader this is the 3rd of 3 books in the series. Don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed all 3 of the books, including this one. Mr. Iles has given the reader a good sense of how things are and have been in a place like Natchez during the last 60 years. Another 50 pages or more details in the epilogue would have made the ending much more interesting to me. I would warn the prospective buyer of this book to not try to read this book as a stand alone. You really need to read the other two books, in order, first.

William the Conqueror: The Bastard of Normandy, by Peter Rex

A new biography of the Norman king who conquered England in 1066, changing the course of the country forever. Of Franco-Scandinavian descent through his father Duke Robert 'the Magnificent', William the Conqueror's life is set against his true background, the turbulent Norman Duchy which, even after the Conquest of England, remained his primary concern. William is revealed as the brutal and violent product of his time, much given to outbursts of rage, capable of great cruelty, autocratic, avaricious and prone to a sort of grisly humor, yet, with all that he could also be a loyal friend and affectionate husband and father.

His military reputation rests mainly on his victory at Hastings but he showed little sign of strategic or tactical genius. A competent rather than inspired general, he benefited from the mistakes and disunity of his foes. Only at Hastings did he meet and defeat a man who was his peer as a leader of men. William inspired great loyalty in some and even greater hatred in others. His primary attribute was his ruthless will which made him the driving force behind Norman ambition in North Western Europe, while his propagandists shamelessly manipulated the facts to justify his conquest of England, a dubious enterprise if ever there was one.

REVIEWS

"...did a splendid job in answering all of my questions.... a balanced view of William. He neither creates for the reader a hero, nor a monster. William, is a complicated person because of his polar personality."

Does the early bird really catch the worm, or end up healthy, wealthy, and wise? Can some people really exist on just a few hours' sleep a night? Does everybody dream? Do fish dream? How did people cope before alarm clocks and caffeine? And is anybody getting enough sleep?

Even though we will devote a third of our lives to sleep, we still know remarkably little about its origins and purpose. Paul Martin's Counting Sheep answers these questions and more in this illuminating work of popular science. Even the wonders of yawning, the perils of sleepwalking, and the strange ubiquity of nocturnal erections are explained in full.

To sleep, to dream: Counting Sheep reflects the centrality of these activities to our lives and can help readers respect, understand, and extract more pleasure from that delicious time when they're lost to the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Scientist Martin (The Healing Mind) is on a mission to cure our "sleep-sick society" and convince us, for our own good, to start taking sleep more seriously. Pithy, wry and earthily humorous, this book is Martin's manifesto for a healthier society. He systematically critiques how our culture encourages us to skimp on sleep (usually so that we can work longer hours), and he rues the bad example of our befuddled, jet-lagged politicians. Applying scientific fact, theory and experiment, Martin demonstrates the similarity between sleeplessness and drunkenness; the links between the hours modern schoolchildren keep and ADHD; the role of sleeplessness in man-made disasters; and how sleeplessness and night shift work can contribute to serious illness. Martin highlights extreme abuses of sleep deprivation in torture and in warfare, while also celebrating sleep's creative power, telling of musicians who have woken up humming melodies and the scientists who benefited from the problem-solving qualities of deep REM sleep. When he discusses dreaming, Martin touches on the habits and beliefs of traditional societies as revealed by anthropologists, and neatly debunks Freud's interpretation of all dream imagery as sexual. A writer fully in command of his subject and his style, Martin reveals just how deeply and madly we pay for our collective indifference to the value of so simple a pleasure as a good night's sleep.

From Booklist
As Martin catalogs what science has learned about sleep, he also exhibits a penchant for literary epigrams, cuing a discussion of insomnia or sleep's quality of escapism with a theme-setting quotation from Shakespeare, Milton, or Dickens. This arts-and-sciences combo lends fluidity to his presentation, as does his style of making a simple question (e.g., How much sleep do people need?) every subtopic's point of departure. Apparently urbanites are not getting enough sleep, and have not since the invention of electric lighting upset the dusk-to-dawn sleeping pattern of preindustrial societies. Martin chalks up the nefarious effects, including traffic and industrial accidents, impaired learning, and health problems. Our frenetic civilization also, Martin avers, deprives people of sleep's delights of restfulness and dreaming. In his synopses of sleep research, Martin exudes a sociable, we're-in-this-together demeanor that is appealing to readers, especially those willing to stand back and consider in detail how they fall asleep and dream. If in need of a popular-science introduction to slumbering, libraries can't go wrong with Martin's offering. Gilbert Taylor

I have to say that this book is a little challenging to read. So far I am about 100 pgs in and it is still very interesting. I like all the examples of what sleep deprivation has done to us. Not the best book ever but I would definitely recommend it to people with any interest in sleep and dreams

How To Draw Manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons Volume 1: Drawing Made Easy (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)), by Go Office, Hikaru Hay

The foundation for drawing manga begins with the artist copying the works of an admired manga artist. The artist learns the traits of the characters' faces and figures while replicating the eyes, the mouth, and other features and recreating the overall images projected. The first chapter of this volume painstakingly explains the artistic development process beginning with copying professional artists' work to the point where the beginning artist is able to produce his or her own original manga. The second chapter covers the basics of a character's face and body, as well as portraying backgrounds. Chapter Three demonstrates how characters from professional manga artists' work are portrayed.

The Good 'n Bad
By Pumpkin
The Good:

Compared to the other How to Draw Manga series, I would say this book was a summary of every book in the series. With multiple artists and varying styles, it offers a beginning artist a definite edge and foundation for drawing manga. Not only does it show a more stylized version of manga, and also shows a more realistic version. This was one of the more useful books for head angles. The heads are a variety of , high, low, and side angles. This is very useful for a beginning artist so that their work doesn't look dull or monotonous.

The Bad:

I somewhat felt a little ripped off when I saw the price for such a small book. Also, it seems as if this book doesn't go deeply into each specific section. It's more of a 'general' help book. For instance, if you want to know more about anatomy, I recommend buying the 'Bodies and Anatomy' book in the How To Draw Manga series. This book is more of a 'overall' book.

In conclusion, I'd recommend buying this book if I was a beginner or intermediate. You can always improve as an artist. Hope you found this helpful.

Perfect For Begginer Manga Artist
By A Customer
This was my very firt book my daddy bought me and let me tell you, he made a smart decision on buying How To Draw Manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons! This book is great for the basics of Manga.

My personal favorite was the deep detail the author went into when drawing the head. I also liked how the author clearly showed the differences on age of the child, protagonist, younger adult, mother, and an elder.

I would recommend this book to all ages, only one page with minor, let me repeat, MINOR nudity. Overall, this was a pretty great book.

it's alright
By H. Thomas Lehmann
okay this is my first review ever so hang in there with me alright? Now I purchesed this book "How to Draw Manga: Ultimate Lessons vol. 1" mainly because I like the other HtDM books and I wanted to see what this had to offer me. When the book came I was expecting it to be as big as the other HtDM books. Boy was I wrong! it was as thick as the others but the hight and with were 'shorter' none the less the content of the book itself prooved to be of some help. The book itself starts off with the begining mini comic or 'manga' if you will then the table of contents, and then the actual material. The first chapter is all about the basics, starting with "practice by starting with copying" then it moves onto how to go and create your own charatures by showing you the basics of drawing (start with a rough general outline of blah blah blah then refine it and add detale blah blah blah). First they start with the head and face the move down to the torso, arms, and legs. In the book they also show examples of expressing emotions, depicting 'cool action poses', a little bit of sceanery, and how to properly hold your drawing tools. IN the book itself it says these are the goals it's trying to teach you:

1) The Basics of Faces

2) Basics of Figures

3) The ABC's of Tools ans Materials

4) Basic Background and Special Effect Techniques

and

5) Producing and Original Draft of Manga

In all it's a pretty helpful book; however it'll do you jack if you don't put it to use.. in other words keep on drawing. The book is only there to help you get ideas on how you may want it to look. It's not going to do it for you, or magically you'll be able to draw "manga" the instant after you read it.

Now I gave it 4 stars because for some reason I felt that it was lacking a little something in it.. other then that it's a great refference book for anyone, not just people who want to draw manga/anime, who wants to improve their drawing technique.

Places in Motion: The Fluid Identities of Temples, Images, and Pilgrims, by Jacob N. Kinnard

Jacob Kinnard offers an in-depth examination of the complex dynamics of religiously charged places. Focusing on several important shared and contested pilgrimage places-Ground Zero and Devils Tower in the United States, Ayodhya and Bodhgaya in India, Karbala in Iraq-he poses a number of crucial questions. What and who has made these sites important, and why? How are they shared, and how and why are they contested? What is at stake in their contestation? How are the particular identities of place and space established? How are individual and collective identity intertwined with space and place?

Challenging long-accepted, clean divisions of the religious world, Kinnard explores specific instances of the vibrant messiness of religious practice, the multivocality of religious objects, the fluid and hybrid dynamics of religious places, and the shifting and tangled identities of religious actors. He contends that sacred space is a constructed idea: places are not sacred in and of themselves, but are sacred because we make them sacred. As such, they are in perpetual motion, transforming themselves from moment to moment and generation to generation.
Places in Motion moves comfortably across and between a variety of historical and cultural settings as well as academic disciplines, providing a deft and sensitive approach to the topic of sacred places, with awareness of political, economic, and social realities as these exist in relation to questions of identity. It is a lively and much needed critical advance in analytical reflections on sacred space and pilgrimage.

Review

"Jacob Kinnard sets his sights on a place, and sits and watches that place over time, observing shifts in light, the movements of people cutting across the frame, and ultimately takes note of the ways people gather together. These chapters are like long exposure photographs, with the resulting image capturing the blurs of activity of many people for many purposes over time. By seeing places in motion, Kinnard also puts scholarship in motion. A rich take on space through time." --S. Brent Plate, author of A History of Religion in 5 1/2 Objects
