On Being Different: Diversity and Multiculturalism in the North American Mainstream, by Conrad Kottak, Kathryn Kozaitis

On Being Different provides an up-to-date, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary account of diversity and multiculturalism in the United States and Canada. Kottak (recent inductee to The National Academ of Scineces) and Kozaitis clarify essential issues, themes, and topics in the study of diversity, including ethnicity, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. The book also presents an original theory of multiculturalism, showing how human agency and culture work to organize and change society. The authors use rich and varied ethnographic examples, from North America and abroad, to help students apply the material to their own lives, and thus gain a better understanding of diversity and multiculturalism.

Invest in your education not the bookstore,,,
By Thank God I'm Fabulous
I purchased this text for a college anthropology. The suggested text was the newer version that was sold in the college book store for over a $100.00 that I did not want to spend. This one is almost identical to the newer version. I had no problem following in class. This text is an easy read, hard to believe it is college level. After comparing the text to other classmate text on the first day of class, I was relieved I had made a great decision. Saved myself a lot of money. This particular professor was retiring after this quarter. He had a firm policy his entire career not to use textbooks in his courses. He is a Instructor/lecturer and finally succumbed to the pressure from the college to require a text sold through the book store. When I showed up with this version for a fraction of the price, not purchased from the bookstore he was happy to see I found a way around the grossly overpriced college bookstore. We hit it off great. I have great respect for the man and his belief that an education is expensive enough without an Educational Institution raking starving students for books that they will only buy back for pennies on the dollar, literally.
The textbook is laid out very orderly. The content pages are very descriptive. The authors Conrad Phillip and Kathryn A. Kozaitis included a page listing Reflections throughout the book which are situations that relate to diversity that drive the message home about all types of diversity. I call these pages 'food for thought' and interactive. These authors not only supply all their credentials, they also include pictures of themselves, which I think is befitting for a text on diversity. Each chapter gives a list of contents of what is important about each chapter. There is plenty of bold print for keywords. The examples in the book are very relatable along with the picture. In order to understand diversity you also get lessons in history. The text and pictures are in black and white, I could use a little more color in the text writing, however I think the black and white pictures drive home the history of the diversity in our nation.

Adequate For Basic Information, But Little Else
By Jeff Richardson
I use this text as part of a cultural diversity university course and considering the course requirements, it was an adequate book. The writing is done well enough, but could have been more objective in nature. There are a few bright moments in some chapters, but overall the text is void of anything really spectacular. At best, I can describe this textbook as something that's just "there" with ambivalence being my most vivid recollection of having read through it all. If you need it for a course, by all means buy it. If not, you're better off looking elsewhere for a more balanced and objective text.
