A good basic primer
By travel light and smiling
I have been a student of the subject for years. THIS mechanics is not about how to restore a 1956 Chevy Bel Aire. This Mechanics is about the principles that give you a foundation in many types of engineering. Mechanics is the place where math and concepts meet, so that you can gain an understanding of, for example, why a pulley works, and how many pulleys you need to use to cut your muscle effort way back.
It's a very good primer on the subject. You don't need calculus to solve the problems, and they explain the "whys" of the subjects very well.
