"Preeclampsia remains a lethal enigma of pregnancy. Encompassing more than just hypertension, it can include abnormalities of platelet behavior and clotting mechanisms and of endothelial, hepatic, and renal function. The first edition of Leon Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (1978) was a scholarly monograph, written by a scientist with a passionate interest in the condition. Since then, the number of maternal deaths from preeclampsia and eclampsia per million pregnancies has been halved in developed countries. Nevertheless, preeclampsia, together with eclampsia, remains one of the two most frequently cited causes of maternal death in the West. The second edition is a multiauthored book. The three editors are researchers who have made a particular effort to achieve a degree of homogeneity in the presentation. The contents are divided into six main sections, each overseen by one of the three editors. About the Author
Robert N. Taylor, MD, PhD is Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wake Forest School of Medicine. Previously, he was Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Emory University and Director of the Center for Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Taylor received his undergraduate education at Stanford University and completed the combined MD-PhD program at Baylor College of Medicine. His graduate work on the molecular biology of estrogen action was performed under the supervision of Roy G. Smith, PhD and Bert W. O’Malley, MD. Dr. Taylor trained as a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology and subsequently as a fellow in Reproductive at UCSF. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Lewis T. (“Rusty”) Williams, MD, PhD in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at UCSF, where he studied the regulation of placental angiogenesis by growth factors and their receptors. He is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist widely published in the areas of preeclampsia, embryonic implantation and endometriosis. Dr. Taylor serves on influential international, national and state executive committees including the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, NIH Reproductive Scientist Development Program, several NIH Women’s Reproductive Health Research advisory boards, and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. He is a Past President of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation and honorary secretary of the World Endometriosis Society.

Dr. James M. Roberts, MD is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Epidemiology and Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Pittsburgh. His research includes fundamental, clinical and health services approaches to the understanding and management of adverse pregnancy outcomes. He led an NIH RCT (10,000 women) of antioxidant vitamins to prevent preeclampsia. He has been the recipient of lifetime achievement awards by the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy, the SGI and the Preeclampsia Foundation Hope. He has served or serves on the editorial boards of journals including, Placenta, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology, Metabolism. Reproductive Sciences, Women’s Health Issues and Hypertension. He has been on scientific review boards of the NIH, the CIHR, the FDA and the March of Dimes. He was the chair of the NICHD Maternal Fetal Medicine Network from 1990 -1999 and is past president of the Perinatal Research Society, the North American Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy, the Society of Gynecological Investigation, and the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy. He was formally admitted to fellowship ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in September 2000. He has been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He has also received mentoring awards from the NICHD and the Society of Gynecological Investigation.

F. Gary Cunningham, MD is holder of the Miguel and Beatrice Distinguished Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is also chair emeritus of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, having served in that position for 22 years. Dr. Cunningham received his MD degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Charity Hospital of New Orleans. Following this, he completed a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UT Southwestern and Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. His early career was influenced by Dr. Jack Pritchard, and together they performed extensive clinical and laboratory research in preeclampsia and eclampsia, coagulopathies and other hematological complications of pregnancy, as well as a myriad of medical and surgical disorders complicating pregnancy. He has served as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, served as tor for an NIH consensus conference, and is a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Society for Gynecologic Investigation, and the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. Dr. Cunningham has served as senior editor of the 18th through 24th editions of Williams Obstetrics.

Dr. Marshall Lindheimer, a professor (emeritus) of Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Chicago is a longtime admirer and was a longtime friend of the late Leon Chesley. Chief Editor of the second and third editions of this text and leader of the search for its current chief editor, Dr. Lindheimer prefers to be called “editor emeritus” despite continuing to comment and publish in the area of the hypertension and renal disease in pregnancy. His CV contains over 400 publications including a monograph, other edited texts, reviews, text chapters and articles devoted to both basic and clinical research. Boarded in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, he is the recipient of many awards and honors that include an honorary membership in the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine and an ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology London. He has received an Honoris Causa degree from Bern University, the Chesley award from the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy, the Belding Scribner Award from the American Society of Nephrology and the Joseph Bolivar DeLee Humanitarian award from the Board of Directors at Lying-in Hospital, Chicago. Both the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois and the Preeclampsia Foundation have honored him as well. Of note on his wall is a congratulatory letter from President Obama, recognizing his accomplishments in regard to the health of pregnant women and their unborn children.

About the Author
Steve Gould and David Wilkinson are the coauthors of The Golf Delusion. Indispensable for the Amateur Roaster -- And No Longer Dated

In June, 2001, I wrote about "Home Coffee Roasting":

"This book is worth several times its purchase price for the two-page roasting chart alone. As a technically-oriented (read: geek) amateur roaster with three (3) roasters (a Hearthware Precision, an Alpenrost, and the fabulous Sonofresco fluid bed) I am constantly referring to this book to improve my art and understanding.

But, amazingly, the book -- only a few years in print -- is now dated, because the equipment options for the home coffee roaster have increased so much. My three roasters (or the types they represent) are not covered. That's the only reason that I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. But if you roast coffee at home -- regardless of your equipment -- you need this book.

What else is missing? I'd love to see a table in the appendix covering the top 50 (or so) growing regions and rating the AVERAGE bean on acidity, sweetness, body, finish, etc, so that one has a clue where to begin when making a blend. The professional coffee roaster is cupping samples all day long, and quickly learns the characteristics of the world's coffees. But we amateurs, buying 1, 2, or 5 lbs at a time could use a secret decoder ring that would tell us in advance what variety we should order that has a good chance of rounding out that blend that is "not quite there yet." Short of that, David's excellent narrative coverage in the book of different coffee characteristics will have to do."

With the release of the "Revised, Updated Edition", the book no longer merits the caveats I described. In particular, Davids has meticulously covered the wide range of available home -- as well as cafe or semi-professional -- roasting equipment, and has excellent coverage of the growing availability of equipment and green coffee sources via the Internet. After 5 years of blending and roasting many pounds per week, and as a writer, I probably could by now have almost written this, and yet I found it endlessly entertaining and informative. Someone new to the hobby will, as I said in 2001, find it indispensable.

Fun, informative and enlightening!

Let me start off by saying that I do not like to read at all. I rarely start books and even more rarely finish them. With this book however I read it from cover to cover in three days! A very fun book for the coffee hobbyist or anyone who would like to learn more about coffee and home coffee roasting. Not only is this book packed with history (in a fun way) it is also a wealth of reference information regarding home roasting and the overall coffee process, from plant to cup!

This book is laid out in a very easy to read format. The chapters can be long but everything is broken down into small 1-4 page sections. Kenneth Davids has a real grasp on the fundamentals of coffee production and lays out a lot of information in an easy to follow entertaining way. The book reads very well from cover to cover.

The content is not too scientific and also not too general. Whether you have no idea about anything coffee or you are a coffee hobbyist (like me) you will learn a lot and come to appreciate all that goes into a truly good cup of coffee. Davids also includes a lot of reference information laid out in a fashion that is easy to search and locate specific information such as coffee origin notes, roasting and flavor terms, roasting equipment and methods to name a few. Davids does review and discuss many of todays home roasting equipment quite well however this information is already dated. Not to worry though the total of this information represents a small portion of the total book.

Included are also a lot of drawings and diagrams. This book really captures the romance of coffee and coffee roasting and delivers it in a wonderful easy to read and use fashion. I cannot put this book down and have read and reread many parts of it. I refer to the roasting notes and procedures to assist in my home roasting. This book is as much an indispensable tool as it is an entertaining easy chair read. If you even have a slight interest in coffee then this book has a lot to offer!

A fine work badly in need of an update

I found this book to be very informative and useful for a novice about to start home roasting his own coffee. However, the equipment and resource sections are woefully out of date. This book was published back in 1996 and it shows; there have been many products and resources for the home roaster released into the market since then.
If you are interested in roasting your own coffee, read this book. Even though it is slightly out of date, it is full of useful information, well-written and well-presented.

The Best Book on the Subject

There's not another small-block Chevy book that does a better job explaining how to build a small-block Chevy and the best products to use under a certain budget. This book gave me no-BS information that made it far easier to select the best KB pistons, Scat crank, and Scat rods for my 350 build-up. There's a huge amount of information and flow data on aftermarket heads from RHS, Dart, Edelbrock and some others. With the all the information, it made it easy to pick out heads with the right chamber size. But what I really liked about the book are the charts and information for picking out a cam. Vizard get into the nitty gritty of cam selection and the charts are awesome. In the charts, you find your application, engine size, and from there you can select the cam. And it gives you some stroker application.

engine overhaul instruction manual

This is an excellent instruction manual for small block Chevy engines. It goes into detail that most manuals lack.
This manual is an additional resource to keep and use in the future. The chapters on heads and cams goes into detail you don't get in a normal repair manual. Cylinder head flow, cc'ing the heads, cam degree, valve lift, overlap. All critical when blueprinting an engine and not normally addressed in a typical manual. As a 30 year ASE Master Technician, this is one of the best books I have ever had. It will never be out of date. Blueprinting an engine has not changed, technology has just made it easier.

This is a great book for people that want to know how to get the most out of budget parts. if you are looking for something to help you find out how to make your 400 dollar heads work like 1000 dollar heads then this is it. For those of you that are looking at building your first engine and are looking to see how to put one together or how exactly to make the best performing engines you might want to consider something else. Dont get me wrong, this is a great product but for beginners it doesnt go into a lot of detail about certain parts but does tell you a lot about performance needs and building a budget engine.

About the Author
Candace Nelson is the founder and pastry chef of Sprinkles, the world's first cupcake bakery. She has been featured everywhere from O, Vanity Fair, and People magazines to Good Morning America, the Today Show, The Chew, and The Talk. Candace's cupcakes have inspired accolades from the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Blake Lively. Sprinkles has more than twenty locations nationwide, featuring cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, and Cupcake ATMs. Candace was a judge on Food Network's hit show Cupcake Wars, which filmed ten seasons and airs around the world. A former investment banker, Candace is a graduate of Tante Marie's professional pastry program in San Francisco and of Wesleyan University.

Well-written with lots of photos, but no salted caramel cupcakes

As expected, Candace has released a gorgeous cookbook full of pretty photographs of her sweet baked goods, a well-written intro into how Sprinkles came into be, and accessible recipes for home baking.

Amazon hasn't released a look inside for this cookbook, which is crazy, so I'm attaching the table of contents to this review as 3 photos.

You'll notice (perhaps) this cookbook does not include recipes for some of Sprinkles' most popular cupcakes, especially some of the limited edition/seasonal ones. It is billed as Sprinkles baking, not Sprinkles cupcakes, so I don't feel misinformed at all, but it's worth noting only about one third of these recipes are cupcake recipes, and most of them are the standard flavors. It breaks my heart that salted caramel isn't in here, but I guess from a business perspective there's a rationale for holding back some of the biggest hits.

The other recipes are more the kind of things you'd expect to find in a baking cookbook, like brownies, pies, cookies, cakes for a variety of occasions, even a little candy. There are two vegan recipes and two gluten-free recipes. I'm looking forward to replicating some of my family's favorites from Sprinkles, like red velvet and vanilla milk chocolate, while trying some new things like Candace's chocolate chai quick bread, butterscotch milk chocolate bars, cocoa mint brownies, and cinnamon rolls.

Unlike the recipe attached to Candace's name in Twenty Five, these recipes all read as though they were well-tested. They're clearly written, and easily made without a huge amount of time investment or extra/exotic ingredients. I'll be testing several of the recipes this weekend and I'll update my review with the results.

Update: I tested the vanilla milk chocolate and the black and white cupcakes first because I've eaten many of both, so I know exactly what they ought to taste like. They both turned out really well. Are they an exact replica of what I can buy at the Sprinkles store? I'd say mine were about 95% of the way there, and I didn't have to pay close to $4 for one (or drive 1 hour to get there). The cupcakes themselves were excellent - full of flavor and not at all dry, but they didn't rise quite as much as I thought they should. Maybe my leaveners need to be replaced. It took me several cupcakes to get the hang of how to frost them in the Sprinkles bakery style, but practice makes perfect, and the last few I made were pretty good dupes (there's a how-to section). I swapped frostings & cupcakes, making 6 vanilla with white frosting, 6 vanilla with milk chocolate frosting, 6 chocolate with chocolate frosting, and 6 black and white cupcakes, then took them into work to get feedback. People loved these. Even the cupcake skeptics devoured them and a couple people fought over the last one.

For people having trouble with getting their cupcakes to come out properly - the one place that seems a little unclear in the instructions is the addition of the eggs. You should add your eggs separately, and once they are all incorporated, then beat for 1-2 minutes (or whatever time the recipe says at that point). Maybe that's the issue? Also, I highly recommend the use of a scale. Candace doesn't provide weights for her recipes, which definitely makes this not a 5-star cookbook. When I made my cupcakes I converted the volumes she does provide to their standard weights (as specified on the labels: 120g per 1 cup flour, 200g per 1 cup sugar, etc). Good luck!

Cupcake heaven!

i can't imagine there are bigger Sprinkles fans than my family - and Sprinkles is in a cupcake class by itself... #1 in a world where every other cupcake is a distant #2. Nothing compares. Nothing.

Now, are these REALLY the Sprinkles recipes from their shops - with the finished product equaling the cupcakes folks wait in line for? After trying 4 or 5, I can say, "probably not" (or at least they don't seem to be exact in these smaller batches, without identical ingredients and equipment to their shops, if anything.)

However, are some of these recipes (3 of the 5 we've tried, so far) about the best possible things that could ever come out of your home kitchen? YES!!! (And the other two were pretty good.) Tender, moist, dreamlike cupcakes with fantastic frostings and a final product that's about 100x better than the pretty tasty cupcakes your baker friend whipped up for little Janie's 6th birthday..

The coconut cupcake recipe, alone, is worth the price of a cookbook, or three. Order some coconut extract when you order the cookbook... and thank me later... (best cupcakes you willl ever have). You may be whipping up a cupcake shop business plan after your friends race about those.

I purchased this on a whim...and amazed! The red velvet cupcakes and the coconut cupcakes are completely worth it!!! But it's just not cupcakes! It's cookies cakes and more! Who would have thought icing shots?! Yes! Do yourself a favor....novice or more advanced home baker... Get this cookbook!!!
