The Vital Judo books are my all-time favorite Judo books.

There are two volumes - Throwing Techniques and Grappling Techniques. Rather than the usual textbooks which include only the basics, these books are dedicated solely to applications and combinations. If you want ideas on how and where to apply your favorite throw or ne-waza move, these books are for you. These books are much more like the Judo Masterclass Techniques, and I wish someone was still publishing these as they are outstanding.

About the Author

Kate Raworth is a renegade economist focused on exploring the economic mindset needed to address the 21st century’s social and ecological challenges. She is a senior visiting research associate and advisory board member at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute and teaches in its masters program for Environmental Change and Management. She is also senior associate of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and a member of the Club of Rome. Over the past 20 years Raworth has been a senior researcher at Oxfam, a co-author of UNDP’s annual Human Development Reports and a fellow of the Overseas Development Institute, working in the villages of Zanzibar. She is also on the advisory board of the Stockholm School of Economics’ Global Challenges Programme and Anglia Ruskin University’s Global Resource Observatory. Kate lives in Oxford, England.

Wonderful book

I was a little skeptical at the thought of another book on economics, so I opted for the cheaper kindle version. After twenty minutes with the book, I was so impressed that I also ordered the hard back version so that our hard-pressed library can have a copy.

I've realized recently that our way of thinking about economics has led into a political cul-de-sac. This book has answers that ring true.

Got my Kindle copy on Thursday evening, the eve of Good Friday, went to bed at 3am on Good Friday morning. Could not put it down.

Just as Quantum Mechanics describes the physical reality at the Planck scale, and General Relativity describes the physical reality of a 13.4 billion years old universe, Doughnut Economics is an uplifting, inspirational road map to a just and abundant society of humans deeply embedded in the circle of life on planet Earth. I only wish that it was available to me in 1984, when I was doing my MBA at the University of Auckland, and struggling to make sense of Econ 101, and Corporate Finance.

Don't believe the trolls: this book is brilliant

The review that trashes this book is clearly written by a troll. It is an embarrassingly bad misreading of what the book really says. Economics students will love it. Economics profs...well, not so much, at least those who have taught the stuff that crashed the economy in 2008, which, I'll wager is the discipline of the troll.

Doughnut Economics is built on a powerful core concept - 'the Doughnut' - the sweet spot below the planetary boundaries yet above the minimums needed for human life of sufficiency and dignity. The image depicts what Raworth calls humanity's goal for the 21st century: 'meeting the needs of all within the means of the planet' and then asking what kind of economic mindset would give us a chance of achieving that goal. It is precisely the book that the economics discipline has been lacking, which is why traditional economists may find it hard to grasp.

Part of the book's originality lies in revealing the power of imagery and visualization in economics, as the book tells the story of old and new economics through their most iconic images.

The book creates a synergy between different kinds of new economic thinking, from ecological to complexity and institutional. It gives an excellent overview for readers who are new to these alternative economic approaches, but also shows what happens when they interact.

The book shows how the core concepts of 19th and 20th century economics set the stage for the neoliberal narrative that has dominated economic policymaking since the 1980s, and is now bringing humanity to the edge of a cliff..

It's written in a highly accessible and amusing style that anyone can understand - there's no prior need for an economics education here. In fact, having one might just blind some readers to the clarity of Raworth's thinking.

In the era of nationalist populism, we need this book more than ever. It offers a powerful alternative vision of the kind of economy that we ought to create.

Anita Millspaugh teaches programming courses in Visual Basic, C++, and Java at Mt. San Antonio College and has served as chair of the department for 8 years. She received her MBA from California State Polytechnic University, with a bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems. Anita has also led Great Teacher's Conferences for Mt. Sac and for California Vocational Faculty.

Julia Case Bradley is professor emeritus at Mt. San Antonio College. From 1978 until her retirement, she taught courses in introductory and advanced Visual Basic, Access programming, and Microsoft Office in the department of Computer Information Systems. She began writing BASIC textbooks in 1984 using MS-BASIC (GW-BASIC), and has authored or co-authored texts in Macintosh Basic, QuickBasic, QBasic, Visual Basic, the Internet, and desktop publishing using PageMaker, Ventura Publisher, and Publish It.

An awful textbook, not worth a fraction of the price.

This is the worst programming text book I've had so far. Chapters are poorly focused, and often certain programming ideas are only partially explored with a brief mention, but no solid example of implementation. Every chapter is a long linear confusing slog through various concepts without self contained examples. A good chunk of the material is drag and drop windows form building, while the more important basic concepts/features that actually require more instruction are glossed over.

Also, for some reason, this author does not use camel casing like in every other programming book I've read. Everything from methods, to fields, and properties, use pascal casing making it difficult to glance at the source code and quickly find what you are looking for.

The only good thing (for some people) is that it introducing the reader to 3 tier programming. Overall, I'm pretty upset that I was required to waste money on this book.

This book does not flow or build your knowledge in an orderly fashion. You are left to figure things out. Which defeats the purpose of a book. This is a very hard to read book as far as programming books go. The authors could have spent more time "dividing and concurring" the subject matter than just providing the information in chunks for you to workout. I would prefer that my teacher chose a different book. Sincerely.

To any professors or students who plan on using this book please be warned. This is the absolute worst textbook I have ever used. Most OOP terminology is skimmed over and there is no walkthrough for the code examples that many students need. Many times during the use of this book I went to look for a reason or to gain an understanding as to why the authors did something. I rarely found it. The first two chapters are basically a hack job. The database section is also worthless. I rarely write reviews but if your professor recommends this book you might want to find a better teacher because they obviously have not looked at this text. Good luck.

"Dr. Steven A. Finkler" is Professor of Public and Health Administration, Accounting, and Financial Management at New York University's (NYU) Robert F Wagner Graduate School of Public Service (NYU/Wagner). At NYU/Wagner he heads the specialization in health services financial management. An award-winning teacher and author, Dr. Finkler is engaged in a variety of research topics in the areas of economics and accounting.

Among his publications are sixteen books, several of which are "Finance and Accounting for Nonfinancial Managers," third Edition, (2003), "Budgeting Concepts for Nurse Managers," third Edition, (2001), and "Cost Accounting for Health Care Organizations," second Edition, (with David Ward, 1999.). He has also published more than 200 articles in many journals, including "Health Services Research," the "Journal of Public Policy and Management," and "Healthcare Financial Management."

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics (dual major in Accounting and Finance) and Master of Science degree in Accounting from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His Master's degree in Economics and Doctorate in Business Administration were awarded by Stanford University.

Dr. Finkler, who is also a Certified Public Accountant, worked for several years as an auditor with Ernst and Young and was on the faculty of the Wharton School before joining NYU. He is a member of the Executive Board of the International Society for Research in Healthcare Financial Management, the Editorial Board of "Health Care Management Review," and the Board of Governors of Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center. He served as Editor of "Hospital Cost Management &Accounting" for 12 years, and is a past member of the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He consults extensively, both around the country and abroad.

Daniel L. Smith is a father, poet, writer, teacher, counselor, and bee keeper, living in the midwestern foothill forests of the Ozarks. He has been writing poetry for over fifty years. Born and raised in the mountains of Appalachia, Smith's poetry dates back to his youth. In his twenties, he was a founding editor of Allegany Mountain Press, and a contributor in poetry to the Bread Loaf Writers' conference for three consecutive years in the 70's. A writer who teaches writing, he has taught at St. Bonaventure University, Miami University, and Lindenwood University, among others. He worked in commerce as a writer with diverse projects from technical writing and illustration, in his own woodworking and boat building and antique restoration business, and for the past twenty five years, as a counselor, program director, clinical consultant and mentor in the field of addictions. Although he is described as a contemplative psychotherapist, he maintains an active practice in St. Louis Missouri US. Smith is also a teacher of meditation and gains insight through teaching others how to be a counselor, use meditation as a therapeutic modality, and use drumming as cross cultural healing. His interest in complementary and alternative medicine led him to treatment free, natural, organic beekeeping, from which this current slim volume proceeds. Smith's other poetry collections include "The Prophetic Tempest," "Something Like The Cost of Darkness," and "Coming Home Late," and forthcoming "Without Thought of Return." His works in non fiction include "God, Gambling and Grace" (guidelines for counseling gamblers and their families); "The Fifteenth Night" (essays on shamanism); and "I Remember It Differently" (a memoire addressed to his children). Fiction includes "House Stories."

Able to pick up a number of useful things

Finkler et al: Financial Management for Public, Health, and Not-for-Profit Organizations

4th Edition

This was the book assigned to me for my class specifically for Nonprofit Financial Management as I pursue my MBA specifically for Nonprofit management.

As textbooks go, it is serviceable. The writing is clean and clear, and is easily understandable for someone that has some background in accounting. I am the Director of Finance at a nonprofit, and I was able to pick up a number of useful things from this, though a lot of it was review.

A couple of things bothered me a bit. There is a chapter about the time value of money (here it is chapter five). The book teaches the student how to approach the problems from a point where the unknowns are plugged into excel. This may just be me being old fashioned, but to me it skipped a step in being overly reliant on technology instead of going back one step and showing the derivation and making the student go through the motions to get an understanding of where excel is coming from. It’s not that it isn’t there - for example the derivation of finding the value of the annuity is footnoted, in small print. Again, a small concern, but one nevertheless.

A second thing is to look at the cost. Due to a mix up with the professor’s syllabus, I had first bought the third edition of this book, before being told that the fourth edition was the only acceptable one. The problem is that at the time, the third edition was less than half the price of the fourth edition. The kicker was I ended up with both of the editions side by side, and looking at the first three chapters I noticed no discernible difference. This may not be true in later chapters as I didn’t make the comparison. If you are assigning the text, have a look at the third edition for the student’s sake.

The price is a rip off.

The book is very helpful and would be of great avail to anyone interested in learning practical tools of public and nonprofit financial management. However, after conducting the cost-benefit analysis I can't see how this book can be worth $200 (!!!), its an outright rip off. Pages are easily soiled and sticky, binding is really weak (after 1 day use I can see first page is already unglued). The authors did a great job improving this edition, but can't say the same about the publisher. This $200 book is not gona last long, I feel ripped off.

This is a valuable textbook. If you are considering buying the older version they are very similar. EXCEPT the problems at the back of each chapter are very different. 4 star because the book is too expensive.
