About the Author

David Hanscom, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon who has been performing complex spine surgery since 1986. Much of his practice has been helping patients out of a deep hole caused by multiple failed spine surgeries. He spent the first eight years of his practice focusing on surgical solutions and noticed that surgery alone was rarely successful in accomplishing its goal. He successfully resolved his own chronic pain in 2003 after suffering for 15 years. He began to share his experience with his patients, and by helping his patients address all aspects of chronic pain, including physical conditioning and the central nervous system, he has witnessed many patients become pain free.�

Written by a most experienced and knowledgable orthopedic spine surgeon, this book provides a non-surgical approach for the treatment of chronic back pain, for both surgical and non-surgical patients.
Surgical intervention for chronic back pain has been fraught with poor postoperative results.
Dr. Hanscom himself bears testimony to the struggle of unresolved chronic pain which ultimately became the foundation and catalyst for his research and the development of his Back in Control program.
He possesses a wide experience with surgical patients whose back pain and associated quality of life had not substantially improved following surgical intervention.
Dr. Hanscom has approached the multi-faceted ubiquitous ailment of chronic pain from scientific research of neurophysiological pain pathways.
His non-surgical program for chronic pain treatment has been proven efficacious.
DOC, direct your own care, is outlined in 4 sequential stages which requires self indulgence and perservence.
As a health care provider I have worked with Dr. Hanscom and his patients and have witnessed first hand the successful resolution of their heretofore chronic pain using the program, Back in Control.

Dr. Hanscom focuses our lens onto other, less well known, etiologies of pain. Drawing from a huge experience and wisdom, the author provides the reader with new ways to view and subsequently treat pain. As outlined in the text, the traditional concepts of pain are often not sufficient to best treat patients who are suffering and moreover, the treatments themselves often do more harm than good. However, the current medical climate (emphasized in chapter 15) has evolved to not have a proclivity to look for better ways of understanding and treating many pain syndromes. As a neuroscientist, chapter 3 was most interesting to me and focuses on imbedding pain pathways. In the end, anyone (both lay or medical professional) in chronic pain or who knows someone with this issue, will find a wealth of knowledge in this approximately 300 page easy to read book and will probably find many answers and treatment strategies.

An amazingly helpful book! Dr. Hanscom shows that he really understands what chronic pain sufferers are going through, by sharing his own experience and those of the patients he has helped. The genius of his approach is that it is so straightforward - anyone who wants to escape chronic pain and makes the commitment can use his techniques and suggestions. I found that this book is one of those rare gems - truly life changing on many levels.

This is a great book, although it can be wordy and at times a little confusing. Touches on the importance of communication within teams, how to choose good teams, and how to deal with conflict within the team. It was required reading for a course I took, and I came away with a better understanding of team dynamics in the workplace.

Pass the Plonk, Please

Something has happened to food writing over the past decade or so. So much of it now is dedicated to specialist topics such as sustainable farming, organic produce, head to tail cooking, dining experiences involving sous-vide or foam. These articles are like hanging out at a wine tasting where everyone is a wine snob and you don't know what they are talking about and you are reluctant to mention that your personal favorite is the vintage last year red that's sold in a jug.

I like stories about chili cook-offs or why someone decided to stop being a vegetarian or what it's like to be a wait person or dishwasher or busboy, which is what food writing was before the specialists got hold of it. Even the big chefs of old, Julia Child, James Beard, and other foodies like M.F.K. Fisher and Craig Claiborne, wrote essays that were about life beyond food, and they rarely took themselves too seriously.

This year's Best Food Writing starts out with the ponderous chef-heavy writing and works its way to the more personal essays. The best pieces are toward the back of the book. My favorite was an unexpected essay by comedy writer John DeVore. He declared that Taco Bell has the best Mexican food. Preposterous! Then he proceeded to back up his statement quite convincingly. The article started out with a dude-ish tone but quickly moved on to a more thoughtful and even touching conclusion.

Even Anthony Bourdain took a break from his tough guy posturing to write an ode to the clams of his childhood and the pleasure of passing on a tradition to his daughter. I also enjoyed the story of Friday Night Meatballs and that of Carolyn Phillips' connecting with her Chinese father-in-law by cooking a holiday meal with him.

There's enough variety in the collection to be sure that you won't walk away from Best Food Writing 2015 hungry.

A feast!

I've been buying and reading the Best Food Writing series since BFW 2000 came out (the year it started) - and this, the 13th volume, has more pages added to it with an even more diverse range of topics. I love how Holly Hughes spots the trends and organizes the articles around the trends, which are relevant. I hope she keeps this up for years and years to come...because not only is she a genius at selecting the articles and discerning the trends, she does so deftly and it feels like returning to an old friend's kitchen table, picking up where we last left off, and having a feast.

I love love love this book. It's a collection of essays of great food writing and all of the ones that I've read in here are amazing. They really connect how food writing isn't just about the food itself but it has to do with the people that you eat food with and the places where you eat food. There was only one or two that I thought were ehh. The essays made me cry, the made me laugh, and the essays made me remember why I loved eating food. This isn't one of those sit down and read the whole book type things its more of a book that you want to sit down and flip thru the pages until you find one that you want to read. It's a great book to keep around the house to inspire you! Would recommend this book!!!

Gives me valuable backround in to the Era

When I heard this was going on sale I admit I immediately preordered, and having received it Monday afternoon and read it front to back I can honestly say I got my money's worth and more.

The Book itself covers several topics including The Republic, The Empire, seperate sections for the Jedi and Sith, as well as an entire section on the Hutts, Mandalorians and the criminal elements of the Galaxy. Towards the end of the book it covers all planets currently in the game with one planet every two pages.

As a Roleplayer this has provided me with valuable insight in to the era that The Old Republic is set in, as well as source material to fill in gaps in my information. It outlines Imperial and Republic military rank structure, the ideologies behind both the Republic and Empire, as well as philosophies and structure of the Jedi Order and Sith.

In addition to the above it includes several biographies of key figures we've seen throughout the game like Darth Malgus, and it also has a summed up play by play of the class stories and an overview of the class itself (So maybe skip over the classes you haven't played!)

All in All I've gotten every dime out of this book that I was hoping to.

Be warned, this book is a cofee table book and reads most comfortably resting in your lap or on a table.

The Dust Cover is removeable and the hardcover underneath is just as well designed and artistic as the dust cover itself without the writing getting inthe way of the art

Must Buy for any enthusiast of Star Wars interested in this Era.

A Must Have for any SWTOR Player

For anyone curious about the game Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (KOTOR II), or any of the media from that time period in the Star Wars universe, this is a must have. It only collects and presents the various information in an easily readable format, but provides so much background for SWTOR.

If you are fan of SWTOR or are curious about the game, pick this up, you will not be disappointed. This book provides a lot of background for the game, but expands on the game with more details that while available, you don't have be looking at computer screen. You can be curled up in bed with a nice cup of hot chocolate and read about the vast universe of Star Wars 3,500 years before the movies and the epic game created by BIoWare, Electronic Arts (they can do things right at times people), and LucasArts.

This book is truly a must have if you are serious about SWTOR as it expands your knowledge, making you stronger. Remember "[t]here is no ignorance, there is knowledge" or "knowledge is power" depending on your side.

i bought this book after watching this trailer https://youtu.be/adZR-Pp_JO0 and wishing that the story could be made into a movie.
The book feels solid filled with information, from what has transpired since the knights of the old republic game until this very point. This book provides information on the Sith Empire, The Jedi and the Republic, it had detailed explanations of the many character classes from the game as well details of the starships, weapons, alien races.
the book is a masterpiece of star wars, if only this story line would be picked up to be made into a movie, it would be fantastic.

About the Author
Samuel T. Gladding is a professor of counseling in the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University. He is a Fellow in the American Counseling Association and its past president. Gladding has also been president of the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB) and Chi Sigma Iota (counseling academic and professional honor society international). A prolific writer, Gladding is the author of 41 books (including revisions), over seven dozen refereed journal articles, and five training videos. He has twice been a Fulbright Specialist (China and Turkey), an external evaluator of counseling programs in Malaysia, and a mental health responder after the terrorists’ attack of 9/11 in New York and the shootings at Virginia Tech.�

A seventh edition in need of significant overhaul

This is a fine book for an overview of group therapy if the reader understands context. While it pays lip service to multiculturalism and diversity, the bias in this book is very male and pretty much Caucasian. Men formed consciousness-raising groups because they were threatened by the women's movement? And the women's groups listed are mostly "victim" groups or women struggling to identify themselves as something other than caregivers? Doesn't really reflect modern groups for women. And the idea that college women would need to attend groups to prevent "date violence" (source for that note-1996) is outdated and sad. Women are more than victims or potential victims. The references fall into the 2010-present range very rarely--lots of 20th-century references to be expected in a text about a profession that was born in that century. But in this case, it seems to be indicative of a need for a more serious overhaul. This is a seventh edition and it seems to have evolved little from its first incarnation in 1991.

Ayşe Zarakol is an Assistant Professor of Politics at Washington and Lee University.
