Stephen Prince (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is Professor of Cinema at Virginia Tech University. There are better text books

I had to buy this textbook for my second film class, and maybe it was because I was welcomed into the film world with a lot of depth, but this textbook one certainly did not live up to my expectations. Film books themselves are supposed to be a work of art! Movies and Meaning was stripped of color (95% of it) and the explanations were not as in depth as others I've been exposed to. Color and the meaning of colors/tones/lighting is EXCEPTIONALLY important in film! How are you supposed to visually demonstrate lighting techniques, color saturation or desaturation, or tones without color?
The only thing I did like is the few random pages in the middle of each chapter that they dedicated to a certain director.
Overall, I think that if you're trying to learn the basics of film, there are better textbooks out there.

Good book - covers in detail all aspects of filming.

I like this book. It is one of the few textbooks that I actually have liked. I like it because it breaks down every element of the filming process. This book has eleven chapters. The topics covered are:the structure of film,cinematography, production design, acting, editing, principles of sound design, narrative film, visual effects, modes of screen reality, business and art, film theory and criticism. I love how the book breaks down and explains each aspect of film. It is not a how to book; it is geared towards giving reader/students a better understanding of the filming process. One of my favorite things about this book is that it pulls examples from modern films. Yes, it uses older films as well, but it also utilizes current films making it easier for us younger students to visualize exactly what the book is talking about.

Strong film textbook.

I really have found many sections of this text very strong and backed with great visuals. This isn't a find your terms and done book. You need to read the text, connect with the images and consult film examples to reinforce the concepts.

The new full-color update is awesome.

I can understand why some reviewers find it dense. It is. As an English / film teacher, I read and re-read. This text, as I alluded to above, is not a quick read because really learning to analyze film takes the words, stills, vids., and more...

Some of the useful information in this book includes: the origins of the bion experiments, with photos; photodetection of orgone via contact photography, the cellulose orgone-scope and electronic sensors; cancer theory; bion water therapy; the orgone potential of fluids; and information on the effects of orgone therapy on developing children. Great to have on your shelf!

Very ground breaking!

What fascinated me the most about this book(what I new was content in the book before I purchased it) is Reich's experiments leading up to his muscular armoring and cancer work. I followed up on some of Reich's experiments in earth(soil) bions that yielded some very interesting results. My binocular 2500X magnification compound light microscope with a micro camera gave some interesting videos that I find hard to explain by tradition means.

Dr Alex Blewitt

Dr Alex Blewitt has been developing Java applications since version 1.0 was released in 1996, and has been using the Eclipse platform since its first release as part of the IBM WebSphere Studio product suite. He even migrated some plug-ins from VisualAge for Java to WebSphere Studio / Eclipse as part of his PhD in Automated Verification of Design Patterns. He got involved in the open source community as a tester when Eclipse 2.1 was being released for Mac OS X, and then subsequently as an editor for EclipseZone, including being a finalist for Eclipse Ambassador in 2007. More recently, Alex has been writing for InfoQ, covering generic Java, specifically Eclipse and OSGi subjects. He was the keynote speaker at the OSGi Community Event 2011 on the past, present, and future of OSGi. The coverage of both new releases of the Eclipse platform as well as its projects and video interviews with some of the Eclipse project leads can be found on the InfoQ home page; for this, he won the Eclipse Top Contributor award in 2012. Alex currently works for an investment bank in London. He also has a number of apps on the App Store through Bandlem Limited. powerful development tools

Hmm. The book came out in August 2014. Strange that no reviews have been posted by now (Dec 2014), so I will try to remedy the situation.

Eclipse is perhaps the most common development environment for java programming. Blewitt shows the latest developments in its support for adding plug-ins. A good aspect of the book is that it jumps right in. You are expected to be already using Eclipse and hopefully have written some prior plug-ins.

Chapter 2 has a long discussion about how the classpath is used. As a practical matter, complexity and bugs can arise from problems with the elements (jar files) listed in the classpath. This is not restricted to programming with Eclipse. But the chapter delves into the details of, for example, the loading of all extensions via the classpath. To this ends, you might also check out chapter 6, which is a companion description of class loaders. Historically, this was the crucial idea that drove the very successful use of java inside enterprise computing on the Internet in the dot com years. You can now see here what the latest features of the class loader can do for your code.

The text also goes into OSGi services and runtime. For dynamically hooking up your executable to existing services.

Another useful feature is the Gogo shell and a console view, where the latter comes with Eclipse. Likely, you have run the console to see output from your programs. But the text shows how other consoles can be invoked, with various advantages for each.

Throughout the book are many code snippets and examples of running programs from a console or terminal window. Useful guidance.

In summary I can tell you that as a long-time user and instructor of Primavera P6, I found this book to be excellent as both a self-study tool and reference guide. It's direct, no-nonce narrative and crystal clear examples provide the reader with the right information to understand the concepts, functions and best practices for mastering Primavera P6. Ample screen shots and diagrams help you to navigate the interface and understand the context of the topics. The book is thorough in detail and yet will not overwhelm the reader. I can happily recommend this book to both novice and expert alike.

The book is one of the most comprehensive titles I have read on Primavera. Each module whether the Thick client or the Web Module has been explained in great detail and easy to understand language. I just hope a few more examples were used to cover all the functionalities explained in the book. The book is quite extensive and will suit all readers may it be Beginners or experts. There are a lot of books in the market explaining the Standalone client in great detail but Daniel has made sure that the web module is explained thoroughly and this will suit all the Enterprise users of Primavera.

One of the refreshing aspects of this book is that it is written by people that have used the products for years in a real world environment. They have taken the lessons learned and incorporated it into one manual for the rest of us. This book is well written and will give you insight into a software product that is not always user friendly. I highly recommend anyone that uses Primavera P6 on a daily basis to buy it and keep it by your desk. Even if you have been using the product for years, you will find nuggets of information in here that you may not even had ever thought about.

I really wanted to like this more...

Its a pretty good book and an easy read at only 155 pages (even though the Amazon site lists this book at 224 pages, where are my other 69 pages?) I enjoyed the mob stories, and I could understand the connection between mob business and honest business. Although the more I think about that last sentence the more I realize that the so called honest business world seems to have a lot more crooks in many of the top jobs. How does that work?

The book has a printed hardcover which I think is superior to a dust jacket. I also liked that I could download a copy of this in e-book format and also in audio book format. I downloaded the first 5 chapters of the audio book and listened to it on my Crackberry Storm while I watched my sons T-ball game. It was my first ever audio book and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lets me multitask, and that's always a good thing.

The book basically tries to say that some mob guys could run successful legitimate businesses. Maybe. I grew up in an Italian family in the Bronx. I have spent many hours in and around "Italian social clubs", and while there were some pretty sharp guys there, very street smart, I do not think they would be that good running a large corporation. The mentality seemed to me to be more about instant gratification and not directed at long term growth. But then again when I look at the headlines of newspapers and see what most of these CEOs are doing, maybe a wiseguy could do at least as good a job? or better?

The final chapter of the book, "pick your philosopher" is a final test. Machiavelli or Solomon? Do you want to crush your enemies at any cost, or do you want to do the right thing with a clear conscience?

I really wanted to like this book more, but I could not take it seriously as a business/motivational book. Its not a great business book, but it is a good, light read after you have read all the other great business books.

Not the Business Book Readers May Think

In I'll Make You an Offer You Can't Refuse, Michael Franzese, former capo in the Colombo crime family, shares his insight and wisdom in running and making the most of your business. From the basics, like creating a written business plan, to keeping it legal, Michael offers antidotes and stories that describe how he reached success while a high ranking member of the mob.

But therein lies the problem. There were double standards throughout the book. For example, Michael Franzese tells us to put together a clear, focused, and written business plan. However, not if you are a mobster. A mobster's objective is always to get as much money as possible, as fast as possible, and they prefer not to have paper trails as these can be incriminating. So if Michael Franzese did it the mobster way, without a written plan, why is he telling his readers to do it another way?

The business information contained in the book wasn't particularly unique or fresh. Play it straight, learn to listen, put a lid on greed, don't gamble, and operate with integrity are just some of the significant messages explored in the book, but a lot of the information felt like common sense. Certainly good lessons with moral appeal, but not new, insightful, eye-opening information for most people (perhaps I think too highly of the integrity of the human race?).

One of the best aspects of I'll Make You an Offer You Can't Refuse is its strong message of motivation and encouragement. Michael Franzese devotes an entire chapter to failures. He explains that failure is normal, and that some failure in life is to be expected. But value comes from using the failure as a tool for learning and improving, and the best way to handle failure is to pick yourself up and dust yourself off.

Michael Franzese writes with a strong, wise-guy voice that is easy to read and entertaining, but may not be the business book readers think. He writes, "Life is all about the ingredients." Put in good ingredients and you'll get a good product. I'll Make You an Offer You Can't Refuse is less a lesson in running a business, and more instruction in living a good moral life.

Breezy, Light Advice Guide From A Wise Guy

I'll admit, I don't read a lot of self-help books and have pretty much avoided the genre entirely. What intrigued me about this book is how the author, a former mob hotshot who got pinched by his bookkeeper, claims he can apply what he learned managing a mob empire to the "legitimate" business world.

On the whole, it works because of the breezy, conversation style of the author, who keeps it light and entertaining with numerous war stories, asides, and bits of advice from King Solomon and Sun Tzu.

If you are looking for simple words of wisdom from someone who has run a huge criminal money-making operation, this is your go-to guide.

About the Author
Gerald Durrell was a world-famous naturalist, animal-collector and conservationist. Born in India in 1925, and having lived in Jamshedpur, Corfu and Crystal Palace, he eventually founded Jersey Zoo in 1959. He was a lifelong lover of animals, and after taking numerous trips to collect exotic wildlife for the zoo, he founded the Jersey Wildlife Conversation Trust in 1963. He also wrote numerous well-loved books about his glamorous and not-so glamorous experiences, his most famous works being My Family and other Animals and The Overloaded Ark.

Gerald Durrell spent most of his life collecting interesting animal specimens and Durrell is an interesting human specimen himself. His well chronicled life (mostly chronicled by Durrell) begins with the hilarious, and very succesfull, "My family and Other Animals". It is ably followed up with the equally hilarious "Birds, Beasts and Relatives". Both books are full of tales from the Durrell family's years on the Greek Island of Corfu, pre WWII. Little Gerry dives right into the flora and fauna of the island, including its human fauna. I own very few nonfiction books with such a plethora of memorable characters. Now, of course, we get to the volume in question. It is plenty good, and worth multiple readings over years, as is "A Zoo In My Luggage" and several other books detailing trips to collect animals. A word of warning, don't go nuts and buy all the zillion Durrell titles. Some of them are out of print for a reason and were most likely dashed off by Durrell to finance a collecting trip or two. If you read a sampling of Amazon.com reviews you will sniff these out and avoid wasting you hard earned lucre. And please, get "My Familiy and Other Animals and "Birds, Beasts and Relatives" right now, if you dont have them already.

Still enjoyable nearly forty years on

This book is about a business that, for the most part, no longer exists - the business of collecting animals for display in zoos. Wildlife conservation has changed a lot since then so the kind of expedition that Gerald Durrell and his companion, John, undertook in 1953, described in this book, just could not happen now.
Gerald describes how he and John spent several months in Cameroon collecting a variety of animals, birds and reptiles and some of the adventures they had, including the triumphs and disappointments. He acknowledges right at the beginning that the expedition may seem more exciting than it really was, because all the boring aspects have been omitted. Even so, there were enough exciting moments to fill this book.
He describes some of the local people, who he mostly got on well with - but of course he did have some problems and we are told about these. He describes some of the creatures he collected, and the disappointment when some died or escaped.
My favorite (both at school and now) was a chimpanzee that had already been domesticated. Gerald was asked to look after him before he could be shipped to London. This was no ordinary chimpanzee, as he not only enjoyed smoking cigarettes but was able to light his own using either matches or lighter, and also displayed other characteristics more normally associated with people than with chimpanzees. Always remember that this was 1953.

This is a highly entertaining book, which I first read at school, where it was compulsory reading - and it was the only such book that I enjoyed. I still enjoyed it when I read it again recently, after discovering (to my surprise) that it is still available in the UK.

A Lovable and discriptive novel.

Durrell's descriptions are so enthralling, I actually read the entire book in one night. If you like books about animals, such as the All Creatures series, you must read this book. I first read this book when I was 10, and this was probably the first adult book I read. The way Durrell describes the catching of animals and the way he captures each character's essence is incredible. You will fall in love with this book. I strongly recommend it.

Deserves better

Being a fan of more than just Kate Beckensale, I was really excited to immerse myself yet again in this universe.

Unfortunately this particular comic falls quite short of the mark.
The adaptation for the first movie is awful. Very poorly written out with very little information given at all.

The second film adaptation is a better, but moves to quickly and glosses over much of what is presented in the film itself.

The high point of this collection are the Red in Tooth and Claw stories.
Though it does not line up with the third film in any way, it helps flesh out the character of Raze a bit.

Get the Red in Tooth and Claw collection, otherwise, stick with the movies.

Love Underworld? Then you will LOVE this!

There isn't much to say - if you are a true fan of the Underworld franchise, you are going to fall in love with this graphic novel. I usually look down on graphic novels/comics/anime/manga/etc. but I really fell in love with this one! I'd also recommend reading "The Crow" by James O'barr if you like this!
