Updates on previously published cases -- Everyone needs this information

I've read the first two Missing 411 books as well. I'd like to call this book the best in the series thus far but all have fascinating stories. "North America and Beyond" does give updates from some cases from the first two books that will only prove them all the more mysterious. This book is cache of little known data on missing people, and is presented in an unassuming fashion. The reader will begin to ask why more hasn't been made of these disappearances in the past, and can deduce precautions to take for their self while in wilderness and rural areas. This book moved me from fascination, to reevaluating how to protect my family, then to the sad realization that hundreds of families have lost their loved ones seemingly into thin air. Everyone needs to read this book.

While Stephen Adly Guirgis has become over the past few years a playwright who has established himeself as one of America's most interesting and bright, Den of Thieves marks a shakey beginning.

The characters, all funny, quirky and contradictory in standard literate comedy terms hold up better than the story, which seems desperate and caught up in it's own funkiness.

If for another reason than an early work by Guirgis, Den Of Thieves offers funny dialogue and bombastic characters.

a master's first attempt at playwrighting

This was first staged in 1996, so it is, from what I can tell, Mr. Guirguis's first published play. It is quite short. Four "very low-level criminals at best and a bunch of pathetic losers at worst" get caught stealing from a club. What they didn't know was that the club was owned by the Big Tuna (a well known NYC mob boss) and his son, the Little Tuna, and nephew, Sal, are trying to figure out how to punish them. Sal wants to kill them, while the Little Tuna wants to make them a deal.

The four thieves are Maggie, Paul, Boochie and Flaco. Maggie is a compulsive overeater-thief who is trying to reform with the help of Paul. Flaco is her hot-headed petty criminal ex and Boochie is a vapid stripper. It is clear that Mr. Guirguis has more than a passing knowledge of 12-step programs here (something that becomes evident in later plays).

There are some funny lines and exchanges, but overall it is just an average play. If you are a fan of Mr. Guirguis, you will want to read it for completeness sake.

Could not put it down. Detailed story telling, describing the intricacies of Indo-Pak relations, on a political, and human level. Well researched. I felt like the author let us in on what goes on in secret in the halls of Parliament, that folks living normal lives don't know about.

The Best Book on English Prepositions for ESL Students

Most ESL students have trouble with their use of prepositions. They sometimes do not know which preposition to use, like "in the corner" or "at the corner".
I, as an ESL teacher, have had a hard time trying to teach students how prepositions should be used. I have not managed to produce good results so far. But from now on, I have a great help.
This book starts with "Introduction" and "Orientation". After them, in each chapter some prepositions are discussed, such as "on vs in", "by vs near", "for vs to". Using iconic and pictorial illustrations of usage of prepositions makes it easy to understand their images or meanings. Most of this book is written in plain English so that ESL students can use this book by themselves. Of course ESL teachers will find this one quite a good book.

A helpful book for those who want to improve their english

I've just got this book, and when I saw it at first time, I thought I'd thrown my money away. It's kind of small, and you can even think it isn't worth its prize. Well, I was wrong. It explains how to use and distinguish all the prepositions, making use of really helpful examples. I highly recommend this book for those who want their english to get really better. But there's only one thing to say: this is NOT a book for those who want to LEARN english. It is an advanced book.

Explaining Prepositions

EFL teachers know how difficult it could be sometimes to explain English prepositions to their learners. English prepositions have their own peculiar way of semantic behaviour and functionality which no other languages have. Grammar books and usage references usually give detailed explanations of certain prepositions, but they are never pedagogically comprehensive in the teaching of prepositions.

What an EFL/ESL teacher needs is explanations and explanatory techniques that can be used in any context of teaching, i.e. with adult learners or young learners. English prepositions are not a separate, isolated chapter in any syllabus or in the contents of a coursebook although considerable amount of classroom time is spent teaching and explaining them in any available way that the teacher has developed or borrowed from elsewhere. Therefore, explanations and techniques suggested by Lindstromberg in his book are the ones that a teacher can use when learners want to hear clear explanations supported with visuals or "icons" as the writer suggests.

The preposition "toward" is explained, for example, with the meaning of the suffix "-ward(s)" with reference to some other prepositions that have this suffix and with the stem "to-" as the central meaning unit of the preposition.

Some important concepts are introduced such as the relationship between the subject of the sentence and the landmark via the preposition used in a sentence as in:

There was a candle on the table.

The landmark of the preposition here is "the table", which is one of the basics as a concept and an important term in order to understand and present to learners what a preposition does in a sentence.

Non-depictable aspect of a preposition is also mentioned throughout the book when needed because this is the point where a visual may not be very helpful as in the writer's examples (p. 17):

We live by the sea. (depictable)
It was broken by vandals. (non-depictable)

Therefore, the book will also help especially the novice EFL teachers (native or non-native) to raise their language awareness in that simple visual techniques are not always adequate to present such a meaning in the second example above. Moreover, idiomatic and metaphorical extensions of meaning in English prepositions are dealt with thoroughly in the book.

Phrasal verbs are dealt with in chapter 22 as their meanings are not easy to work out without knowing the role of prepositions in their meaning. Looking at the perfective aspect of certain prepositions in phrasal verbs, for example, is an approach that seems to work in order to understand certain number of phrasal verbs that suggest "completeness" as in the example "I've read this book through."

"English Prepositions Explained" is a resourcefully written comprehensive reference and teaching guide book on prepositions for both native and non-native teachers who wish to understand them and to have ideas, suggestions, techniques in order to present their meaning clearly and effectively in an EFL/ESL learning environment.

About the Author
CHRISTOPHER KOSTOW is the critically acclaimed chef of The Restaurant at Meadowood in St. Helena, California and the third youngest chef to ever receive three Michelin stars. Chef Kostow draws upon his own American upbringing and singular beauty and bounty of the Napa Valley, to cook food that is thoughtful, personal, and in concert with his community and collaborators.
Kostow, a Chicago native, majored in philosophy before moving to the kitchen. He has cooked in celebrated kitchens such as Georges on the Cove in San Diego, Campton Place in San Francisco under Daniel Humm and Le Jardin des Sens in Montpellier, France. After earning two Michelin stars at Chez TJ in Mountain View, Kostow arrived at Meadowood in 2008. He has since been chosen as one of Food & Wine Magazine's Best New Chefs in 2009 and holds an award from the James Beard Foundation for Best Chef: Pacific 2013. In October 2014, his first book; A New Napa Cuisine, will be published by Ten Speed Press.

Beautfully written and presented

This is a beautiful glimpse into a talented chef and his deep personal connection to food and his surroundings.

From the texture of the cover, to the thick pages containing the personal narratives, photos, and recipes, "A New Napa Cuisine" is an earthy connection to Christopher Kostow, his experiences in Napa, and his connection to the community and landscape through food. The writing style is both modest and descriptive in a wonderful way.

But let me get on to the recipes! This book contains some really impressive recipes - each simply titled by the names of the major food components of the dish. The recipes have accompanying photographs that are stunning in presentation.

The recipes in this book are not for the amateur chef. Many require some difficult to find ingredients and/or specialized equipment to prepare.

I recommend this book for foodies as a beautiful read and for chefs who enjoy modernist cooking and the process of creating an elegant and unique dish.

Nice story, not-so-nice recipes

The author's story is interesting and uplifting. I truly enjoyed reading about how his life put him where he is, doing what he does. But the recipes are not intended for people who don't have access to P�rigord truffles, white truffles, foraged ingredients like "spice bush" and manzanita berries, foie gras (which isn't even legal to sell in California any more), a chamber packer, a steam oven, the botanical expertise to tell edible daylilies from poisonous daylilies, a host of molecular-gastronomy hydrocolloids, and slaked lime (which warrants its own HAZMAT sheet, though Kostow makes no mention of any hazards associated with it).

Some of the recipes are needlessly complicated. For example, the procedure I use for making homemade queso fresco is to heat milk, buttermilk, and cream to about 180F, add lemon juice, cook until curdled, and strain through cheesecloth. Kostow would have you put the same liquids into a sous vide bag, cook in a steam oven at 190F for two hours, and strain. But what you get is indiscernible from the cheese made using the quicker and easier method.

The two stars are given for the author's story and for exactly *two* recipes which a home cook might actually follow.
