Michael Lassell is a widely published, award-winning author of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, whose work has appeared in scores of newspapers, magazines, literary journals, and anthologies. A former theater critic, he holds degrees from Colgate University, the California Institute of the Arts, and the Yale School of Drama. He lives in New York City, where he is the articles director ofMetropolitan Homemagazine. The evolution of a mermaid

This colorful book is a treasure. Part Broadway program, part coffee-table book, part fairy tale history, it's for fans of both the Hans Christian Andersen tale as well as Disney's spunky 1989 animated film, which of course has recently become an award-winning Broadway show. It's also a fascinating primer in how a Broadway show is put together.

The focus is on the Broadway show. Writer Michael Lassell includes interviews with director Francesca Zambello, choreographer Steven Mear, writer Doug Wright, composer Alan Menken, designers George Tsypin and Tanya Noginova, lyricist Glenn Slater and Sierra Boggess, who plays Ariel onstage. The book is lavishly illustrated with photos showing not only the Broadway show itself but the backstage sets, rehearsals, costumes, wig makers, storage rooms and models. There are also scores of examples of concept art and sketches, scale drawings and historical illustrations.

A page called "Eels on Wheels" is devoted to the special shoes used by performers that allow them to glide across the stage, emulating swimming. Another spread called "Tentacle Rehearsal" details the laborious routine used to get villain Ursula's octopus tentacles to move properly onstage.

I loved a section called "Songs." Each tune in the show gets a full page. In "Under the Sea," a photo of Ariel shimmying with her underwater friends is accompanied by the lyrics "Just look at the world around you, right here on the ocean floor, such wonderful things surround you, what more is you lookin' for?"

The hardback book has a padded cover.

A fun final touch: the last page is titled Fin.

Bought for my daughter as opening night gift for her debut as Ariel. The history from the Andersen story, to film, to Broadway is interesting to read. The pictures alone are worth the book.

Well-researched, yet undermined by 2nd portion's lack of focus.

No Logo is a surprisingly well-researched book, if you can get past the obvious contradiction on the front cover and binding of this major-label production. Whether the "All Rights Reserved" copyrighted logo is meant to be ironic or merely obligatory concessions to the publishing house, it still reflects Klein poorly: either as a powerless pawn or else having a bad sense of humor.

Purely on content, however, as all books should be judged, No Logo quickly shows you this is no left-wing, hippie diatribe of over-generalization, with facts shunted to the wayside. Instead, it reads like a well-planned documentary, meticulously annotated and researched. Klein masterfully identifies the root problem of laissez-faire economics, market-oriented policies, and capitalism in general. For those of us who are a bit slow to comprehend the dramatic shift that has taken place in the free-market business world, Klein neatly diagrams the subtle and not-so-subtle shifts the private, for-profit sector of mainstream business has taken in its quest to orient away from developing products and focus on the development of brands. This paradigmatic shift has launched a new era of capitalism, changing it drastically from our predecessors' definition.

Klein maps out the expansion of advertising into all aspects of human life, the lack of "unbranded space", the Borg-like assimilation process that marketing initiates, devouring all niches, reactions, backlashes and resistance. With this process of lifestyle branding and perpetual advertising adaption, Klein shows the effects of this system of separation of brands and products. She details the flood of franchising, corporate mergers, private-sectors profit-maker's censorship, outsourcing, the exploitation of third-world labor, the creation of "McJobs" inside service economies and the growth of temporary labor and permanent "freelancing".

Klein derails, however, in her attempts to document the anti-corporate activist movement. What has been so far a masterful critique of globalization and corporatism focuses instead on grassroots activism and culture jammers. She spends almost one hundred pages describing (without unqualified praise, to her credit) underground rings of vandals and lone "anti-brand" guerrillas who deface corporate advertising by some irrational belief that their actions will persuade mainstream, moderate Westerners to change their consumption habits to ones approved by vigilantes drawing skulls and rewriting logos. If her discussion of them is to document an overall noble and worthy cause (that is, anti-corporate resistance), then addressing culture jammers in anything but a negative light only serves to tarnish an up until now, very polished presentation. Along with eliminating this episode, Klein would do her cause service by eschewing her description of RTS's absurdities in favor of a more detailed assessment of collectives and people's movements, such as the Zapatistas: uprisings that are rooted firmly in the reality of economics and egalitarian living-- rather than the short-term frivolity of dangerous quasi-riots, or the childish response of throwing pies at CEOs.

Klein also fails to precisely pinpoint what exactly her target is. She explains that it is more than attacking branding; it is about citizenship, not consumerism. Neither is it about attacking corporations via purchasing power. She explains much about activists' activities, but by the time she concludes her narrative, she has done little to address what exactly is the goal-- besides her vague wish for "unbranded spaces". The afterword (written in 2002) perhaps provides a better insight into what she was getting at when she talks about egalitarian movements and non-homogenization.

No Logo is an excellent book if one is interested in learning the largely ignored facts about branding, advertising, and labor politics; it is not a very convincing polemic for those skeptical of non-privatized solutions. With the debilitating portrayal of culture jamming and RTS as equals to the more mature approaches of student and political organizations described, No Logo undoes itself in short order; easily dismissed by those of the conservative persuasion. Although Klein does cover the anti-globalization movement with a broad, documentary-style brush, the pages of No Logo lack cynosure towards social cooperative, collective solutions, feeling reactionary more than inspirational.

this book is an excellent read for people trying to understand how modern marketing and branding works. Naomi answers a lot of questions about what brands are, why theyre important, how they work, and the consequences of them. I spent the first 5 chapters absolutely crucified by rage however, as her examples are very familiar.

As I just read this book, it didn't have the same impact it may have in 1999. Klein is almost optimistic about the changes she was seeing. However, 13 years later and addidas is still getting in trouble for using sweatshops to make clothing for the Olympics... Not much has changed. I didn't necessarily agree with her denouncement of advertisements, because in a way it seems a good advertisement is a form of art... but in general I felt pretty sad that we do this to the third world. Its important that we hold corperations responsible for the treatment of their workers in the third world...

Leon Chaitow ND DO is an internationally known and respected osteopathic and naturopathic practitioner and teacher of soft tissue manipulation methods of treatment. Integrated Approach to Low Back Pain blending Research and Practice

This is one of the most comprehensive texts for rehabilitation of the spine I have seen in over 10 years of practice. As a physical therapist, I've learned that spine rehabilitation requires a broad knowledge of techniques, since every spine patient is different. The modern practitioner needs to have an ecelctic approach to rehabilitation since no 2 patients are alike, even with the same diagnosis. Dr. Liebenson has done a great job in providing the scientific and clinical application of a variety of spine rehabilitation principles with a multidisciplinary approach including a virtual "who's who" of physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, and researchers from around the world. Of particular interest to me is the Czech approach to spinal rehabilitation based on contributions from legendary physicians Vladimir Janda and Karel Lewit. Top researchers including Bogduk, McGill, and Hodges also present the latest evidence-based interventions. I was quite pleased to see the amount of photographs and diagrams illustrating specific techniques and exercises, which is even further enhanced with videos on the enclosed DVD. Long gone (I hope) are the days of "hot packs, ultrasound and massage" as the treatment of choice for low back pain. We know that exercise is the most important component in back rehabilitation, but we must first be able to accurately assess the patient and prepare the tissues for exercise programs specific to the patient needs and goals. Dr. Liebenson and his contributors have given us the tools do do just that... they have captured a virtual paradigm shift in the way we approach the assessment and rehabilitation of the spine. I highly recommend this textbook for any healthcare professional treating spine patients.

Because busy practitioners often rapidly skim articles, especially book reviews, let me start with the bottom line. Dr. Liebenson's second edition of Rehabilitation of the Spine is a "must" book. Any practitioner or student interested in physical rehabilitation of the spine must own and must read this book. The contributing authors represent an impressive array of some of the most notable experts across multiple disciplines, including Nikolai Bogduk, Paul Hodges, Vladimir Janda, Gwendolen Jull, Karel Lewit, Steven Linton, Stuart McGill, Robin McKenzie, Don Murphy, Vert Mooney, John Triano, and Howard Vernon. The cast is much larger yet, is international in reach, and represents some of the most important schools of thought in rehabilitation today. The second edition significantly improves upon the first, which was itself, a watershed document. Every chapter has been re-written and updated. The basic science chapters offer an exceptional overview for the clinical practitioner of what we have learned about the mechanics of the spine over the last 10 years. It re-establishes the foundation upon which so much of our practical rehabilitation lies. It also gives us a lens through which to judge both old and new approaches and techniques. But above all, this is a practitioner's manual, replete with a level of detail that is essential for actual application. In many of the chapters, one can almost hear the voice of an experienced workshop instructor correcting common errors in technique and imparting expert advice. The inclusion of the DVD-ROM is a huge leap forward, taking a lot of the guesswork out of trying to interpret what is written on the printed page. It also has the potential to standardize at least some procedures across multiple disciplines. This could have positive implications for co-treatment within or across professions and could provide a common therapeutic and assessment language for research.

The lay out of the book re-enforces the clinical strategy espoused, having sections devoted first to assessment, then the first 4 weeks of acute care, followed by later recovery care. Then the whole strategy is again re-packaged by region.

Having a keen interest in the field myself, I specifically perused the book for a few specific "bell weather" indicators. I was pleased to see a chapter devoted to manipulation of the spine, an omission which I thought was a weakness in the first edition. For those steeped in some of the current controversies in lumbar stabilization, I found it very interesting to compare the arguments posited by McGill and Hodges regarding the relative value of teaching patients to perform abdominal bracing versus abdominal hollowing. I was pleased to see that the simple and elegant three question Patient Specific Functional Scale was contained in the chapter on Outcome Assessment. And that DeFranca's section on pre-manipulation procedures for the cervical spine abandoned the recommendation to perform DeKleyn's maneuver and or any other extreme positioning of the neck--procedures which have a good sold base of evidence holding them to be worthless. I also noted that Janda's interpretation of the muscle firing pattern associated with hip extension has been abandoned (because of subsequent research findings).

The book also has welcome additions in the arena a neuromobilization, a much improved chapter on breathing, and many interesting additions from the Czech school of rehabilitation. Although not all of these schools of thought work together in complete harmony and although there are often significant differences in practical application, Dr. Liebenson has a real knack for organizing them into a coherent organization that suggests more agreement than disagreement in their overall strategies. The three great strategic pillars support the grand "unifying theory" behind the manual: a variety of approaches to hands-on manual therapy, specific low tech exercise prescription, and focused activity modification for the patient.

Craig Liebenson has accomplished a monumental task with this 972 page tome that covers back rehab from A to Z. In the first 90 pages he exhaustively covers the back pain rehab literature with a special focus on Low Back Pain (LBN.) With 100's of references per chapter, (279 for Chapter One alone!) he convincingly shows the failure of conventional approaches and the new hope for LBN sufferers offered by the latest soft tissue techniques combined with patient reeducation and exercise prescription.

Then he turns the book over to a host of guest experts including Stuart McGill and the Czech pioneers Vladimir Janda and Karel Lewit. They fully cover assessment and treatment for acute and chronic recovery management of back pain with multiple soft tissue modalities fully explained.

This is $100 bucks extremely well spent. If you're a back pain professional who wants to see patients get out of pain, you can't afford not to buy this book.

Chronic back pain CAN be resolved. But only if you're willing to learn something new. This is a GREAT place to start!

This is what literature is about

This novel by Eduardo Lalo reminds me why I studied Literature. It reminds me that literature is supposed to represent something: the time, culture, the struggles, idiosyncrasies, ideals. Not necessarily to teach, but to show, illuminate. It is the difference between reading for mere pleasure and reading to be enlightened. With this novel Eduardo Lalo shows us what it is to be anonymous in the place that you live, be it by the force of circumstances or by your own free will. Sometimes one can't distinguish between them.

The books description of the city and its ambiance made me, as a native from San Juan, relive every moment described in it. The plot keeps one guessing all the time and the love story, although unusual,is handle masterly. A very enjoyable book, one that once begun cannot be put aside.

About the Author
James Kitfield is a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress. Previously he was a senior correspondent for National Journal. A three-time winner of the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting on National Defense, he lives in Alexandria, Virginia.

An excellent read that brings back the lost nuance of how day-to-day government actions affect ground operations and vice versa

This is an excellent book for understanding the bigger picture of our government and how it operates foreignly and domestically. It also covers in detail the cooperation between the primarily foreign and primarily domestic operating agencies and how some of them may end up operating in a way that is not typical (e.g. The FBI operating overseas in several high priority roles). I like how it takes events in the field and shows how they affect and are affected by the government and agency leadership state-side. In such a fast-paced world a lot of the nuance of these various operations is lost and this book attempts to bring that back for the reader to process and understand.

I found some parts of the book a bit dry--usually when long explanations about government structure or all of the people involved in this structure had to be explained. However, usually when things just started getting dry the author finally was able to get into content that was more interesting--and perhaps even reliant on the "dry" explanations just before the content. So I do not consider this a negative toward the author. I believe this was more of a matter of dry content being required to properly present the content he wanted to focus on.

Pros:
*Great information on how our government has changed its foreign and domestic operations over time
*Brings back the nuance of government and how it affects operations on the ground and vice versa

A very informative book. The author provides a lot of insight into the less newsworthy aspects of the fight against terrorism.

Kitfield describes the people who combat terrorism through cultural stereotypes (I tired of reading of how many of them grew up with good, Irish-American values.) and seems to spare the warts. It was particularly interesting to read about Michael Flynn before he was selected to be Trump's National Security Adviser.

Accurate and Readable

I work in this field and know many of the key characters portrayed. I think it's a very balanced account that does not dismiss political aspects of national decline making as merely amateurish and foolish buffoonery; even when they're clearly mistakes. It remains to be seen if this modern war fighting "doctrine" can survive the military-industrial complex's need for expensive huge platforms in lieu of effective tactics, techniques and procedures.

Thought provoking, but frustrating

On the whole, this book contained a great deal of useful information, and did induce some thoughtful introspection. There were many points the author raised which I had simply not thought of before from an "elegant" perspective. For a simple example; wearing more than one pair of earrings at a time is distracting to others and, therefore, not elegant because an elegant woman does not draw attention to herself in such a negative way. That thought had never occurred to me. So, the book has provided some food for thought. My only complaints are that, while the author does state clearly in the introduction that the book is a printing of the information from her website, I have come to expect far more polish from a book. I think an editor would have been a great help. The book is full of grammatical errors (such as question marks at the end of declarative sentences), and also contains repetitive information. On a website page, one can just copy and paste information to another page relying on the idea that most people won't read each page and might otherwise miss the information. In book form, it becomes tedious to find oneself rereading the same information several times. In my opinion, most of the author's ideas are generally very well thought out and researched. The exception being her inexplicable encouraging of mothers to involve their little girls in something as shallow and potentially damaging as beauty contests. Otherwise, I found the book to be worth reading, but I would recommend doing it with a cautious eye.

This book was so much more than I expected, I have read countless books of similar titles, but this one surpasses them all by far. This book has beome invaluable to me. I would definitely recommended this book to any female.

Pretentionus. Full of grammatical errors. Information---nothing new.

First of all, this book is overpriced for a kindle she charges $21.66.

Second, the author exudes laziness. Her book is full of grammatical errors and lacking attention to details (have you heard of editing?)

Third, her point is extremely focused on superficiality (dress this way, act like this.. etc.) and lacking the nescessary concept of achieving inner peace and genuine self confidence.

Finally, she is obsessed to mimic someone else (namely Audrey Hepburn) instead of finding out happiness by being herself. It is a grievous advice to young women who are already bombarded by beauty ads.

This author is just another greedy person and sadly-- pretentious!
