About the Author
Steve Huston was born and raised in Alaska. He studied at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design. Graduating with his BFA, Huston began illustrating. His client list eventually included such names as Caesar's Palace, MGM, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.After nearly a decade of doing commercial work, Huston decided a change was in order. He's developed his unique teaching method over 30 years, teaching drawing, painting and composition- first at his Alma Mater, then at the Disney, Warner Brother, Dreamworks, and most other major studios.Influences include among others Titian, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, the early American Tonalists, the homespun character of the WPA art projects, and the heroic and graphic inventions of the American Comic Book form.Since then, Steve has shown his fine art pieces around the world. He's the only artist in the history of the California Art Club to win their gold medal three times.His work has been featured in Art News, American Art Collector, Harper's Magazine, Southwest Art, American Artist, Western Art & Architecture, Playboy, and many others.

A Bit of a Let Down

What am I missing? I am a big fan of Steve Huston the artist and instructor. I have seen his videos, which are very thorough and detailed. I admire his skill. The book was a let down. It didn't seem to surpass other books on the market and in some ways, fell short of them.

There is less instruction than I hoped. Much of the text needs a re write for clarity as well as some additions for depth. The pictures don't clearly support the text, at least not easily. The authors fabulous sketches aren't even here in abundance, and while it isn't a show off book, if the instruction is lacking, which I believe it is, then at least give us more eye candy or material to copy.

This is much more like a fancy set of notes for those who have studied with Steve Huston or taken his classes.

Negative reviews don't make me popular but I have to call it as I see it. It pains me to say it, but I think there are better books out there.

So you can get some idea where I am coming from and determine if this review is has relevance to you, some books I really like are Mike Matessi's Drawing Force and The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals, Rankin's Fast Sketching Techniques, and Mellem's Sketching People.

The book we have all been waiting for

At long last a book that tells you HOW to do things - I have hundreds of art books, most of them are barely disguised promotions or the art of the author, others order you to: "do this!" but never tell you "how", and you end up starting every drawing hoping for the best and being regularly disappointed.
Steve Huston's book is a blessing for all artists, it explains, shows and analyses in simple but precise terms the how-to that no one else explains. After reading once (and a half) this book I have already had several "ahah! but of course!" epiphanic moments, and I am beginning to know what I'm doing when I begin a drawing - if I do it wrong, no matter, I start again, I know the steps to follow.
Huston also tells us about the meaning of art, the way to freedom in art and gives us tons of examples of all steps in the drawing.
An invaluable, clear, useful book that I can't recommend enough. A beautiful one too, which is always a nice plus.
If you want to understand what you are doing when you do art, and not rely on luck each time you start a drawing, this is a much have book. Many thanks Mr Huston for sharing your knowledge and experience! - M.C.

A Concise but Thorough Look into the Mind of Steve Huston regarding Drawing

Great book. If you have the opportunity to learn from Mr. Huston via recorded lecture (or better yet, in person) you should sketch along with him and take notes, rather than watch him do all the work. Once you have taken your own notes and done your own work, this book is a great way to revisit his notes and ideas in his own words, and it's another chance for you to follow along and do additional work alongside his. The book is thorough but concise. The book doesn't cover much in the way of color or painting, but then again, it's a drawing book. If another book on painting is in the works the consider me already in line to buy it.

Although God can use this book to impact teenage girls when it’s read on their own, Borrowing God’s Glasses is also designed for small group study, grades 6-12. Each of the 18 chapters is followed by a scripture verse for memorization and reflection questions for group discussion. In addition, the appendix is a wealth of small group materials, encouraging group leaders and providing practical tools for using this book to best impact teenage girls’ lives. Included are extra group activities pertaining to each chapter, a basic outline giving a detailed breakdown of a small group time, and two pages that may be copied and used as needed―a weekly update (accountability sheet), and a page for keeping track of the prayer needs of the girls in the group.

About the Author
Lacei Grabill has been involved in youth ministry for the past 15 years. She has taught in the public schools, been a missionary to youth overseas, and led middle school and high school small groups. She is passionate about pouring into the lives of students.

Lacei and her husband, Keith, are currently the youth pastors at Christian Celebration Center in Midland, Michigan. She enjoys going on dates with her husband, spending time with her 3 children, writing, and eating ice cream.

Who should Borrow God's glasses?

I received this book as a gift from a friend and read it this summer. I could not put it down. The chapters were easy to read and each one had important scripture based life lessons. At the end of each chapter is a scripture reference and then reflection questions for girls to respond to and share in a small group setting. Borrowing God's Glasses also teaches you how to set up an all girls small group. There are extra ideas each chapter for group leaders to do during their meeting time. This book is an excellent tool for any church all girl small group to use to ensure bringing up biblically strong women for the Kingdom of God. I highly recommend it to any parent, youth leader, or church small group.

In this new interpretation of Rousseau's political thought, Daniel E. Cullen demonstrates that the concept of freedom is fundamental to the complex unity of Rousseau's work. He shows that the pervasive tension in Rousseau's thought between freedom and order, legitimacy and reliability can be explained as an effort to attune the political to the natural condition and to reestablish a condition of independence in political and social circumstances. Cullen's argument bears important implications for those who currently seek to bolster the case for participatory democracy by appealing to Rousseauian assumptions and conclusions. Cullen's aim is to clarify some of the issues that divide liberals from communitarians and constitutionalists from participatory democrats in the current debate about freedom, rights, morality, and politics in America. In affirming Rousseau's fundamental philosophical agreement with liberals concerning human nature and with conservatives concerning the character of a good society, Cullen suggests that Rousseau has offered perhaps the only possible theoretical resolution of the tension implicit in democratic freedom. In light of what Rousseau calls for in order to bring about this resolution, however, Cullen wonders whether the time has come to rethink fundamental questions about human nature and citizenship that underlie contemporary problems of political theory. Freedom in Rousseau's Political Philosophy will be of interest to scholars and students of the history of political thought and contemporary democratic theory.

A coffee table book for your torture chamber

Giger's art, like the music of Marilyn Manson, the paintings of Jackson Pollock, and the clothing taste of Cher, tends to provoke extreme reactions in people (the classic "love-hate" relationship). This book, as well as the first Necronomicon volume, delves deep into the subconscious and comes up with fists full of squirming demons and violent yet artful sexual imagery. Some people are so repulsed by these "shadowed" parts of the psyche that they condemn Giger's art in general, while others wallow in the decay and degradation he depicts, believing it to be a mirror of the world they see around them. I personally keep Giger's work next to that of Alex Grey on my bookshelf, representing the dark repressed side of human nature coexisting along with the transcendental, spiritual side. Some may call Giger's art spiritual; I personally find it far too celebratory of the flesh for it to be truly spiritually-themed. If you are considering buying this book, first of all be forewarned: it is graphic and disturbing, but if you're looking at Giger books to begin with you probably already knew that. Also, I find the first Necronomicon volume to be better than this one. But if you are a fan you definitely will not be disappointed. You should probably buy one of Giger's lower-priced retrospectives if you're only going to have one of his books, but the attractively presented Necronomicons are the logical next step if you find yourself wanting more. Giger's work is very yin; just make sure you have some yang on your bookshelf to balance it.

this book is a wonderfull addition to any collector of HR Gigers work.
This is a large hardback book with glossy interior pages filled with the paintings of his work and marker drawings, considering that his paintings were completed using an airbrush with only loose masks is remarkable at the detail in his work.
I bought the book from Amazon and in due course When I received it, it was brand new and wrapped and came in a big box which was inside a sack, so the book was in perfect condition, so if you want it this is the place to buy it..

About the Author
Arthur George Morrison (1863-1945) was born and raised in the East End of London. His journalism was first published in the Globe in 1885 and he then worked as a clerk to the Beaumont Trustees, becoming sub-editor of the house paper, the Palace Journal. He left at the end of 1890 to join the editorial staff of the evening Globe before publishing his first book, The Shadows around Us, a collection of supernatural tales, in 1891. It is his acclaimed and controversial East End works though, Tales of Mean Streets (1894), A Child of the Jago (1896), and The Hole in the Wall (1902), for which he is best known.

Another old novel, based in tragedy and hardship, working its way through misadventures and ruthless selfishness, coming out .... well, no spoilers, OK? There's nothing profound or startling here, but it's a good story and I enjoyed it.

The Real Secrets to Student Motivation

Confession: I'm a Larry Ferlazzo follower. Not a disciple, because Larry isn't much into that, but a follower who's read most of his essays and books on good teaching practice, including several I edited for the Education Week Teacher website. I've also interviewed Larry for a blog I help with. I've had dinner with Larry and his wife and fascinating conversation ensued. I loved his earlier book on parent engagement. So that's my transparency.

Here's the thing about Larry: He doesn't just get outside the box, he turns it INSIDE OUT. This excellent book is a good example. There are 100s of motivational books and articles you could buy and read, and when you boil most of them down, they're about external motivators -- rewards, guilt, atta-boy/girl strategies. They may work for a small number of students but they're not very sticky. Very few advice-givers take Larry's approach to motivation, with the teacher or advisor acting in ways that promote and nurture INTRINSIC motivation, the kind that begins to hang out in the adolescent brain/heart and eventually takes up full-time residency. The best teacher textbook I've read in years!

I'm reading this as part of an online class through Heritage Institute. Wow! This is great stuff . As teachers we spend a lot of time trying to motivate our students. We do all the work. This book shows how to put that responsibility back on the students to motivate themselves and teaches them how to do that. It goes on to talk about Higher Level Thinking, games and technology. It's easy to read and has good lesson plans as well as online links. I wish I had read it years ago.

Tangible Lessons You Can Use Today

As a veteran teacher and author of, Our Kids: Building Relationships in the Classroom, building relationships with kids is my stock-in-trade. It is how I survive the day with the coming-of-age-crew. Larry Ferlazzo's book is a great way to do just that. This is a well written classroom resource that gives some real insights and tangible lesson ideas to help kids become authentic learners and take true ownership of their educational careers. I applaud Mr. Ferlazzo's book and his genuine love of kids. Giving a child's education sort of back to themselves is the best way to build a closer and more effective community of learners.

Literary Thriller Delivers & Meets High Expectations

I couldn't wait to read The North Water after reading the synopsis, which made it sound like a superlatively disturbing thriller bordering on horror. I was lucky enough to receive an Advance Review Copy through LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program, and my reading experience left me with the impression that the novel had only been slightly over-hyped. Despite my unrealistically high expectations, I found the book to be a uniquely compelling read, which kept my mind entirely absorbed from start to finish so that I finished it in one sitting.

Author Ian McGuire distinguishes his story from the pack with distinctive stylistic choices as well as the inclusion of gruesome plot elements with the potential to shock and horrify the experienced thriller reader. I myself was not particularly shocked or horrified by these parts of the story. What kept me turning the pages was the sense of immediacy conveyed in the way the events were related. Two key features of McGuire's technique are his use of the present tense for exposition of the narrative and the inclusion of considerable dialogue. Although I would not call the effect cinematic, the novel would work well as a movie, I think.

In any case, I highly recommend this novel to readers seeking a quality thrill. Page-turners of this caliber -- both in terms of style and content -- are few and far between in my experience. Thank you for reading my ideas; I hope they prove somehow useful to some of you.

Exciting Story, Unusual Setting -- But Could Have Been a Bigger Book

After the first chapter I almost stopped reading The North Water. It seemed unnecessarily violent and repulsive. The author rubbed our nose in the filth of the a whaling town and the psychopathic behavior of a harpooner named Drax. A writer paints a scene by choosing details and McGuire chose the most disgusting and loathsome things to focus on. McGuire clearly has great descriptive powers but uses them to vividly describe people's heads being crushed, throats being slashed and blood spraying. I had the same reaction when reading Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. In that case I did stop reading, even though I had enjoyed McCarthy's earlier books. McGuire and McCarthy seemed to enlarge these freakish incidents not to accurately portray life at that time but to shock and horrify needlessly. It feels self-indulgent, like watching a Quintin Tarantino movie where he revels irresponsibly in gore, turning it into what he sees as an art form.

As I continued reading I became more involved in the story which follows a whaling ship heading into the north waters as whales are becoming increasingly scarce. The descriptions of life on board ship are well researched and the characters begin to emerge in a subtle and engaging way. There are no sympathetic characters but as the tale progresses, I couldn't help finding myself most connected to Sumner, the ship's surgeon. The book begins to take on the feeling of a thriller or even detective story as the captain investigates the rape and then murder of a cabin boy. After this, it becomes a survival story with an epic chase across the ice.

There is a cinematic quality to McGuire's story telling where things happen with no preparation. We are transported from one time and place to another with no explanation. It just happens. It felt like McGuire laid the groundwork for a much bigger book in terms of both plot and theme. The writing is at times pretentious as McGuire needlessly flashes an impressive vocabulary as if to say, "This is what real writing is all about." When was the last time you had to look up a the meaning of a word in one of Hemingway's stories? But in The North Water I went to the dictionary many times. While it does feel like a bigger book, McGuire loses confidence and defaults to the thriller genre providing an ending that is unexpected, exciting and -- for me at least -- rewarding. The final lines of the book are haunting and left me pondering everything that came before and the larger meaning of the story.

Brilliant for a lot of reasons

I've not read other books by Ian McGuire but I will now. It's hard to imagine how he could bring to life the Greenland whaling trade in the mid-eighteen hundreds, but it comes through powerfully here--the cold, the chase and kill, the venality of the officers and shipowners, the will to survive under horrifying conditions, the utter lack of humanity of the villain (can't say more without spoiling). I reached the ending and thought---what.. over so soon?!

The scene with the bear hunt and the scene of an iceberg sliding along the ice formation destroying everything--I can't get them out of my head.

I've tried to read Moby Dick and failed--it's my white whale of literature, so to speak. But maybe this book is just better in evoking whaling and the weirdness of the northland. Spellbinding.
