This comprehensive and coherent account presents the 'state of the art' econometric analysis of tropical deforestation, quantifying and examining the local and underlying global causes.

The contributors are distinguished authors from developed and developing countries, and are based in research institutions and international agencies. They provide a global view of key issues such as population, debt, income and poverty and agricultural development. In addition, country and regional case studies are presented, focusing on the causes of deforestation in Latin America and Asia, and the role of the tropical timber trade is subjected to particular scrutiny. The book offers rigorous quantitative analysis at the global, regional and country levels, and dispels some of the myths which surround tropical deforestation. It improves our understanding of the forces driving global environmental degradation, and is testament to the belief that many, though not all, of the explanations for it lie in the workings of national and international economies.

This important and timely book should appeal particularly to environmental and resource economists, development planners, foresters and others concerned with global environmental issues. About the Author
Katrina Brown (editor) is Senior Research Associate at CSERGE, University of East Anglia, and has a background in natural and social sciences. Her work concentrates on the conflicts between development and environmental degradation, and on social and economic aspects of the conservation of biodiversity. David Pearce (editor) is Professor of Economics at University College London and Director of CSERGE, which is the UK's premier research centre examining global environmental issues. He is an internationally renowned environmental economist, has published more than fifty books, and has been awarded the UNEP Global 500 roll of honour.

If you are looking for an adventure book that has fun on every page, you should check out THE ACCIDENTAL CHEERLEADER. It's about two seventh-grade girls who try out for cheerleading, but what they don't know is that one of them made it onto the squad and the other is stuck being the school mascot.

After tryouts everything went downhill. Sophie doesn't know if the life of a cheerleader is her thing. What if her best bud, Kyle, isn't having fun? Should she stay with the most popular girls in school (and on the squad) or should she go back with her real friends? If she goes back to hanging out with Kyle, will she forgive Sophie for using her?

I think you should read this book because it has non-stop action! I give it 5 stars!

THE ACCIDENTAL CHEERLEADER is a FANTASTIC book. Sophie and Kylie are best friends, but they both try out for the cheerleading team. Sophie is a cheerleader,but Kylie is the mascot. They get into a fight. They say they don't want to be friends and everything is ruined. Will Sophie and Kylie be friends again? Survivalist's Guide On Short Filmmaking

I read Nic Penrake’s earlier eBook How To Write A Great Short Film Script and enjoyed the chatty style and sharp analysis on writing for the format. This one goes one better for just a few pennies more, covering finance, production, directing and post.

Again majors heavily on the writing side of things, which was perhaps the most useful for me, but, just as importantly, gives us some striking – and entertaining – examples of how to avoid mistakes on-set.

It’s not an academic type book, it’s much more like a survivalist’s guide to making a good – OK, great – short film. And at just over 70 pages, it’s also really concise and easy to cut through in one session. It’s the kind of ebook I reckon I’ll go back to as a reference for certain things.

OK, I have to admit, I’m biased – I’m the author’s daughter. But I’m also a writer/director/editor and I found loads of useful tips in my dad’s eBook that he hasn’t even imparted to me verbally so far.

I like the chatty style, which keeps it moving along, a bit like Blake Snyder’s ‘Save The Cat’. I can honestly say that for $3.99 this one purchase will either save you hundreds of dollars or the equivalent in helping you raise the production value of your film. It's highly recommended for both beginners and experts.

An Apology that Needs No Apology

When Stephen Gosson attacked poetry in his book The School of Abuse, Sir Philip Sidney correctly saw it as a Puritan assault on imaginative literature. Making matters worse for poets was that Gosson was far from the only voice denouncing the poetic arts. Further, from the classical writers of ancient Greece and Rome right up to Sidney's day there was a tendency to view poetry primarily in terms of what it could offer on a teaching and persuasive level. The ability of poetry to delight was secondary to the latter two. Finally, Gosson's comments were typical of those who still remembered Plato's strictures against poetry from The Republic. It was to confront all these anti-poetic dialectics that Sidney wrote A Defense of Poetry.

In order for Sidney to persuade an audience that he saw as much like himself, he had to couch his response in a manner that would resonate with educated Renaissance courtiers. His structure of dividing his essay into the classic divisions of a judicial argument was a brilliant success. His frequent use of classical allusions reinforce his overarching thesis that poetry has a right to exist because it is the only literary medium that can combine the sister arts of history and philosophy into a means that can teach, persuade, and delight. The modern reader must remember that in Sidney's day such familiarity with history, philosophy, Latin, Greek, and rhetoric was a given.

Once Sidney exposes the shortcomings of history and philosophy, he can assert that far from poetry representing a tissue of lies and a false reality, poetry rather is seen as creating an alternate reality, one that emerges from the poet's own imagination, creating that which did not previously exist. Since poetry reveals a fiction of life, it cannot then lie in any meaningful way. It is essential, he notes, that this alternate reality must do more than teach, delight, or persuade. For virtue to be inculcated in the reader, poetry must motivate that reader to actualize the virtue within the poem and incorporate that virtue into his own daily life. It is this claim that poetry must function as an architectonic or science of sciences that renders Sidney as relevant today as in his day.

Sidney does not shy away from the positions of poetry's opponents. Indeed, he even agrees with some of their claims that some poetry is offensive, but he is quick to note that when a poem offends a reader's sensibilities, that offense is a function of the inept poet and not the poem itself. His evidence is cumulative in effect. He directly addresses and disposes of the charges of Gosson and others of his ilk that poetry is inherently insignificant, emasculating, untrue, and salacious.

Sidney does more than merely defend the right of poetry to exist; he also lashes out at other literary mediums that he himself felt offended by. For example, he was a strong believer in the classical unities of action, time, and space, and literature that violated these precepts such as tragic-comedy, he opposed. He further outlined his distaste for comedy whose purpose was only to provoke laughter based on what he saw as the crudities of farce that were then so popular. Comedy, he urged, ought to be based on a gentler and lighter view of the human condition. Sidney also roundly criticized sonneteers that were overly fond of poetic excesses like Euphuisms, annoying alliteration, and incongruous tropes. It becomes clear that Sidney is a product of a culture that dictates that nature and decorum are the ultimate arbiters of what passes for suitable literature and what does not. In A Defense of Poetry, Sidney was one of the first writers to suggest that poetry is a noble human invention precisely because a well-written poem can make the reader a better person for the reading of it. In one of history's strange ironies, Sidney rescued Stephen Gosson from a well-deserved place in the dustbin of history by defending what was to Gosson as quite indefensible.

For years, I have wished for a comprehensive and pragmatic volume that really explained -- in plain English -- the many complex techniques that are so often used in electrophysiological research. Although there are chapters in handbooks, and even entire books on digital signal processing, none are as comprehensive, pragmatic, lucid, or entertaining as Analyzing Neural Time Series Data.

This is a wonderful book. It covers not only the mathematical aspects of EEG signal processing but also the physiological bases of it, and the author makes this using a language which is understandable by non-mathematicians and it is also precise and clear.
I am a mathematician starting to work on the topic and I am completely sure that this work will increase and reinforce both my understanding of this subject, and my increasing love for it! I strongly recommend this book to everybody interested on EEGs. I just would like to add that this book has a very good complement in another one, published by the very same author and entitled "Fundamentals of Time-Frequency Analyses in Matlab/Octave" (Sinc press, 2014, there exists only Kindle version of it).

A conclusive review

I have had my training as a EE major specializing in signal processing and moved on to do experimental work in neuroscience. Having said that I feel confident in both signal processing and electrophysiology. Mike Cohen has done a great job collecting almost all the useful techniques needed for different types of neural signal processing. An amazing feature of the book as promised on the cover is how Mike has managed to masterfully merge theory and practice without losing accuracy in either. The book, in my opinion, is a must have on the bookshelf of every investigator/student who deals with one sort of neural data.

Great guidebook, definitely recommended for graduate students

I'm a grad student and this book is absolutely perfect for someone in my position. Many of the issues I've come across when looking at neurological data are covered here with great explanations at how to solve them and why these solutions are used. It's fairly easy to read, I feel like it is concise without being imprecise and has plenty of useful illustrations. I appreciate that it is written with actual application of the techniques kept in mind, it feels like a very good guidebook to practical analysis. I wish I had picked up this book at the start of my grad school experience rather than the middle, as this would've made things much more smooth.

Nice overview--and good for history fans also

This isn't the best collection of Atget's work, but it was a great buy at the price, I thought, and the reproductions (in my copy at least) are decent. Anyone interested in history might also find it interesting to see what Paris looked like in Atget's day.

Old Dragon

This is my very favorite book of black & white photographs. The massive dragon gargoyle over the entrance to 50 Rue Du Rennes pictured on the left is now in the Garden Room of the Louvre. Nothing else is left of Rue Du Rennes, which ran through to Rue Dragon, which is still there.

This small beautiful book contains some of Atget's best photographs; printed on heavy weight paper; each photo sharp and clear, keyed to an address in Paris. Wilfried Weigand's superb commentary introduces the reader to Atget's life on rue Campagne Premier, his link to the photographic past of French photographers Marville and Balthus, and, Atget's artistic legacy preserved and brought to prominence by Man Ray and Bernice Abbott who shot three photographic portraits of Atget before his death in 1927. Her straight on portrait of the old man graces the back of this book. Abbott then wisely bought up many of his photographs and negatives ultimately selling them to the Museum of Modern Art and thus bringing his genius to the photographic loving world.

With this in mind, The Economics of the Latecomers attempts to explicate the 'catching-up' process of the most spectacularly successful economies of East Asia, Japan and South Korea. Combining insights from economic history, development economics and the economics of technology, the book emphasises the need for historical models to understand historical processes. This perspective enables the author to demonstrate the limitations of neo-Schumpeterian approaches and the New Institutional Economics as means of analysing the development process.
