About the Author
Laura Kay is Ann Whitney Olin professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Barnard College, where she has taught since 1991. She received a BS degree in physics and an AB degree in feminist studies from Stanford University, and MS and PhD degrees in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California–Santa Cruz. As a graduate student she spent 13 months at the Amundsen Scott station at the South Pole in Antarctica, and has had fellowships in Chile and Brazil. She studies active galactic nuclei using optical and X-ray telescopes. At Barnard she teaches courses on astronomy, astrobiology, women and science, and polar exploration.

Stacy Palen is an award-winning professor in the Physics Department and Director of the Ott Planetarium at Weber State University. She received her BS degree from Rutgers University, and her PhD from the University of Iowa. Dr. Palen does research in the death of Sun-like stars, and formal and informal astronomy education. She spends much of her time thinking, teaching, and writing about the applications of science in everyday life. She then puts that science to use on her small farm in Ogden, Utah.

George Blumenthal is chancellor at the University of California–Santa Cruz, where he has been a professor of astronomy and astrophysics since 1972. Chancellor Blumenthal received his BS degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and his PhD in physics from the University of California–San Diego. As a theoretical astrophysicist, Chancellor Blumenthal's research encompasses several broad areas, including the nature of the dark matter that constitutes most of the mass in the universe, the origin of galaxies and other large structures in the universe, the earliest moments in the universe, astrophysical radiation processes, and the structure of active galactic nuclei such as quasars.

We love this book!

This book kicked off a two-week frog frenzy for my 4-year-old. We love it! So glad Magic School Bus books are still available. This one has excellent information about animal habitats, organized and presented very well. It's made it easy for my son to talk about habitats for other animals as well. Great book.

The Magic School Bus is a great bunch of books. We use them in our homeschool. We really miss the TV show. The books keep my childrens attention. Lots of great pictures and conversation of the students. I think they are very detailed.

I never tried my creations (I didn't want my daughter seeing me make a face if I didn't like it). However

So I stuck with the more basic recipes in this but still found this immensely helpful. I knew nothing about "stewing" fruit, and I had no idea that you could puree meat in a blender. This book includes tips on how to peel, mash and/or cook fruits, what you can introduce at what age, what items freeze well, and a little bit on nutritional contents. It gives you ideas on what foods make a tasty combo in the blender. I never tried my creations (I didn't want my daughter seeing me make a face if I didn't like it). However, my daughter liked every single creation I made from the book. Using this recipe book gave me confidence with trying some of my own concoctions and helped me stay on track with exposing my youngster to a variety of foods early on. There is an index in the back-- one of my favorite features. I used this the most during the 6 to 10 month phase. I also recommend having two of Annabel Karmel's silicone baby food freezer trays-- or something similar. I froze food in the trays and then popped the cubes of frozen food into quart-size or gallon-size ziplock bags and labeld and dated them. I own a blender, nothing fancing, and that worked fine.

Top 100 Baby Purees

Before purchasing this book I actually checked out several of the top reviewed baby puree recipe books from the library so I could decide which one was the best fit for my needs. I liked this one because the recipes were simple and nicely split by age suitability. Plus the pictures were nice. I give it four stars because it would be nice to have a sample menu by age like I saw in at least one book and I find that since I am making these in bulk and freezing, it's easier to just make say peas and sweat potatoes separately and then giving him one of each (I freeze them in ice-cube tray sized portions) for a meal instead of making a recipe containing peas and sweet potatoes mixed together. That said, I've made several of the recipes and so far my son seems to enjoy them. It's also expanded my horizons. If not for the book I know I wouldn't have made rutabaga that's for sure!

Can't rave enough!

I bought this cookbook, an immersion blender (hand-held stick blender), and some Fresh Baby Freezer trays Fresh Baby So Easy Baby Food and Breast Milk Trays and have been making baby food since. This book has some AMAZING recipes. There are a couple of misses as well but I'd expect that out of 100. I've been making notes in my cookbook that I thought would help others:

pg 28 Sweet Potato and Broccoli: Always double this recipe to get 2 trays. The potato/broc ratio is perfect!
pg 43 Cinderella's Pumpkin: This is one of the few I wouldn't make again.
pg 51 Chicken with sweet potato and apple: This is a favorite at our house. I absolutely LOVE this recipe and so does my daughter.
pg 54 Banana Peach and Strawberry: This recipe needs to be doubled to get at least 1 freezer tray
pg 58 Easy one-pot chicken: Good, but I only made it once and just made the Chicken with Sweet Potato and Apple (pg 51).
pg 64 Lovely Lentils: YUM! I think I'm going to make an unpureed version of this one for myself
pg 68 Eat your Greens: Fantastic, it tastes like green mashed potatoes. We made this as an adult side dish in leui of normal mashed potatoes. Would be a great recipe for a toddler who doesn't like their veggies.
pg 71 Vegetables with cheese sauce: wonderful
pg 75 Fillet of fish in an orange sauce: Skip this one. I like fish but this was terrible. We tossed the batch.
pg 95 Blueberry Banana and Apple: This recipe doubled only makes 1.5 tray. The recipe calls for 1 cup blueberries and I've found that a 10oz bag of frozen org blueberries = 2 cups. Great substitute!
pg 106 Pasta with hidden veggies: Yum! Terrific sauce! Would also be good for a toddler who doesnt like veggies

With changes occurring almost continuously, executives need to recruit the best employees, encourage radical thinking and foster communication (especially among younger workers). Annunzio gives a rare and detailed treatment of the workplace relationship between generations X and Y. Enhanced by real-life examples, her points are sharpened by bulleted lists.

Annunzio is a consultant specializing in leadership, communication, and e-business transformation; has taught business at Chicago's Depaul University; and is an adjunct professor at the University of Chicago. Good points gained from a rapid reading

eLeadership is written not for new companies but for established companies whose formerly effective business rules are now causing them problems. Change-management specialist Susan Annunzio provides a five-step process for transforming established cultures and structures to enable flexible and fast-paced leadership. The author starts off with observations about the differences between the Baby Boom generation and the X and Y generations. This does serve to focus executives' attention on improving communication between diverse backgrounds, though it inevitably overgeneralizes.
A core part of her book revolves around the 20/60/20 rule. The top 20 percent of the workforce are the change leaders and high-potential performers at every level of the organization. These are the people who can be spurred to ignite change throughout the enterprise. The bottom 20 percent are the complainers and enemies of change. The middle 60 percent can be influenced by either the top or bottom groups, so Annunzio's strategy is to show executives how to use the top 20 percent to influence the middle group while diminishing the power of the obstructive bottom group. The best chapter is probably chapter 4: "Ask the Unaskable, Speak the Unspeakable". Through real-life examples and clearly articulated strategies, this chapter shows how to break through fear and open communications throughout the enterprise, allowing real change to begin. Most of the value of this book can be extracted by careful attention to this chapter while skimming the rest for the key points. The easy style of writing and the author's restraint in book length makes gleaning the core points rapid and painless. If you are part of a company where everyone feels trapped with old rules but where no one dares break out of the mold, this is a fine book to read and put to use.

Save Your Time and Money ! ! !

I thought this book was awful for three reasons.
First, the author spends way too much time discussing how to placate the 20-somethings in the workforce today. Managing a workforce isn't that difficult. Identify what motivates workers, and then establish opportunities to help workers achieve goals. Managers shouldn't be in the business of catering to the whims of their immature staffers. Managers should be leading by example.
Second, the author is extremely vague about the companies she worked with and the accomplishments achieved. The author should have provided a list of concrete examples - company names, their problems and the solutions to those problems. Instead the author dances around the specifics and speaks in broad generalizations. It leads me to believe the author was called into failing companies and made recommendations akin to rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship.
A company can have the best management in the world. But if nobody is buying its products and services, the company is doomed to failure. Companies need to figure out what customers want, and then give it to them. Unfortunately, too many e-businesses were trying to convince customers to buy products or services they didn't want and didn't need.
Finally, the author's speaking voice reminds me of nails scraping over a chalkboard. Very squeaky and irritating. Her voice lacked any sense of confidence. This lack of confidence was compounded because she failed to list specific businesses that may have benefited from her advice.
Most speakers do a better job in person. I would like to hear the author in a live presentation to see and hear the difference. I recognize that the book was written at the tail end of the dotcom boom and released in the midst of the dotcom bust. In the heyday of the dotcom revolution, what worked early on did not always apply down the road.
I also noticed that Nextera, "the leading global management consultancy firm" that the author use to work for, has sold off all of its operating units, and is looking for a partner to help relieve the net operating loss of $43 million as of December 31, 2003. Nextera's failure raises a series of questions such as:
Did Nextera not listen to it's own consultants?
Did Nextera follow its own consultants' advice and still fail?
Did Nextera's advice to other companies help or hurt those companies?
Then again, perhaps all the good consultants left the company before the financial problems started. I have searched the web some sort of rebuttal or follow up commentary from the author, but have not found anything.
The Bottom Line: I cannot recommend this book. Read Patricia Seybold's newsletters and publications to see what is and is not working in the technology field.
