emphasis on firing techniques, not kilns

This is a very worthwhile and contentful book, just not what it seemed from the brief desciption. Hopefully this clarification is helpful to others:

This book's editorial description, along with the title, seem to suggest that its focus is in how to create various homemade ad hoc kilns (for those that don't have ready access to a kiln already). It talks about kiln building, and never uses the word raku.

Basically, however, this is a raku book, with lots of interesting variations. "Barrel" and "pit" kilns (mentioned in the subtitle) turn out to be just more forms of raku, rather than new kinds of homemade kilns. It contains many creative firing ideas with wonderful results, generously shared by a number of contributors. Along the way, of course, they do tell you how to put together firing chambers for these firing techniques. So it does provide some alternative kiln construction guidance with variations, but not the quantity I was expecting. And the firing techniques were an unexpected bonus.

In style, this is a thin "coffee-table book" - lots of great photos, widely set lines of type, artistic white space. But the content is fascinating and invaluable to anyone who wants to do firings that are more interesting than simply closing the door and turning on the heat. Initially, I was disappointed when I saw how the content of the book was padded out with white space, but after I started reading I realized how much great information was in it.

I would like to see much more expanded content (not counting the gallery & appendices, it is 89 pages). However, this does provide plenty of ideas to try for quite some while. I just need to find a different alternnative kiln book for when I'm not doing raku style firings. (The publisher could really help out here, by giving the table of contents, which really does give an accurate idea of the book content).

Awesome!

I just received this book and it is absolutely one of the best Raku books going! It is well laid out with many high quality pictures showing the technique or concept being presented. Covers much more than raku with many other firing techniques. Has a fantastic picture gallery with fine examples of pieces created with the techniques in the book and a glaze recipe section with references back to the pieces the recipes were used on.
A must have for anyone interested in raku or any of the related firing techniques!

Alternative Firing Techniques

What a wonderful book. As a ceramic sculptor, I appreciate the Raku, Pit, Barrel and Saggar firing methods. It gives one enough of the technical details of the how-to's of each of the firing methods (and how to build a raku kiln, and barrel and pit kilns) to get one started. It also "fires" up one's imagination to expand the contents of the book and to push your work to another level. This book presents beautiful examples of what "Alternative Firing Techniques" can produce.

About the Author
Patricia A. Ireland, CMT, AHDI-F, has worked as a medical transcriptionist since 1968 and has been an instructor of medical terminology and medical transcription for over thirty years--teaching in house and now on line since 2000. A certified medical transcriptionist since 1981, Ms. Ireland has worked in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, and doctor's offices, as well as two years overseas in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia plus 1-1/2 years in Kingston, Jamaica. Ms. Ireland currently lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her cats where she is a part-time instructor for the on-line division of Mildred Elley. She is an active member of her professional association, the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) as well as the Capital Chapter of AHDI in Austin.

Mary Ann Novak, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor for the Information Management Systems and College of Applied Sciences and Arts in the Southern Illinois University. She is a member of Delta Pi Epsilon and Phi Delta Kappa.

My son & I grabbed this book from the library shelves expecting Lola & Charlie, of "I will Never not ever Never eat a tomato".

'My Uncle is a Hunkle' is targeted at an older group than the Lola books, with more intricate plot lines and convoluted happenings.

Or perhaps Lauren Child has distilled her writing since the Clarice Bean books.

Amusing, and some of the sentences constructions were fun to rattle off, but a lot more to read, without the clean illustrative lines.

Plot as follows:
Large family with many children of varying ages, mother is called away, dad is called away, desperate mother must rely on unruly (fireman) brother to babysit.

Kids have wacky and crazy time, which culminates in the debacle to which mother arrives home to.
Clarice Bean & fireman get on 'like a house on fire'.

The text is decorative with lots of spirals and swirls, and collage used througout the pages to illustrate backgrounds, balls and guinea pigs.

Recommended for ages 4-5 or at any point where you don't need to read it to them. I had great difficulty deciding on 3 or 4 stars, eventually granting 4, as it not a BAD book, just not as memorable as other by this author.

For ages 3-5, "I will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato" by Lauren Child highly recommended

My daughter and I simply adore this UK version! We bought CB Guess who's Babysitting (which is the US version) not knowing they were the same books, but we didn't mind. The book arrived faster than expected (was supposed to take 3 weeks) know now what I know about the book I would but the UK version from the UK all over again! Thank you!!!

Joseph V. Carcello, Ph.D., CPA, CMA, CIA, is the Ernst & Young Professor in the Department of Accounting and Information Management at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Carcello also is co-founder and Director of Research for the University's Corporate Governance Center. He has taught continuing professional education courses for two of the Big 4 accounting firms, the AICPA, the Institute of Internal Auditors, the Institute of Management Accountants, and the Tennessee and Florida Societies of CPAs. He has provided consulting services to public companies on revenue recognition and on Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Dr. Carcello has served the Securities and Exchange Commission as an expert witness. Dr. Carcello is the co-author of CCH's GAAS Guide. He is also the co-author of funded research studies by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) of the Treadway Commission that examines fraudulent financial reporting between 1987 and 2007. Dr. Carcello also is the co-author of a monograph published by the AICPA entitled, Fraud-Related SEC Enforcement Actions Against Auditors: 1987-1997. Dr. Carcello serves a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board's (PCAOB) Investor Advisory Group and Standing Advisory Group. Dr. Neal serves as the director of the Ph.D. program in Accounting and teaches a doctoral seminar in empirical/archival research, with an emphasis on auditing and corporate governance issues. Dr. Neal also serves as a research fellow of the ERM Initiative at North Carolina State University. Dr. Neal received a B.S. in accounting from Tennessee Technological University (1988) and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee (1998). Judith Weiss, CPA, has an M.S. in Accounting from Long Island University, Greenvale, New York, and an M.S. in Education from Queens College, Flushing, New York. After several years in public accounting and private industry, she worked as a technical manager in the AICPA's Accounting Standards Division, where she helped industry committees to develop Audit and Accounting Guides and Statements of Position. As a senior manager in the national offices of Deloitte & Touche LLP and Grant Thornton LLP, she was involved in projects related to standard-setting by the FASB and the AICPA. Ms. Weiss has followed the work of the EITF since its inception and has attended its meetings in person or through the internet regularly since 1991. Since 1993, Ms. Weiss has combined her extensive experience in the development and implementation of accounting and auditing standards with her technical writing background in writing projects related to accounting standards. She has contributed to several books in the area of accounting and auditing. She also has coauthored articles on accounting standards for several publications, including the Journal of Accountancy, The CPA Journal, The Journal of Real Estate Accounting and Taxation, and the Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance. About the Author
Jan R. Williams, Ph.D., CPA, is Dean and Professor Emeritus of the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he was on the faculty from 1977 through 2013. Formerly, he was on the faculties of the University of Georgia and Texas Tech University. He received a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Arkansas and is a CPA licensed in Arkansas (inactive) and Tennessee (license to practice). Dr. Williams has, for many years, been actively involved in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, and several other professional accounting organizations. Throughout his career, he has taught continuing professional education for CPAs. In 1994, Dr. Williams received the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award from both the Tennessee Society of CPAs and the AICPA. He authored or co-authored six books and over 100 articles, monographs, and other publications on issues related to financial reporting and accounting and business education. Dr. Williams served as National President of Beta Alpha Psi, President of the American Accounting Association, and Chair of the Board of Directors of the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International, the largest accreditation organization for business schools in the world. He retired from the University of Tennessee in 2013 and continues his involvement in several academic and professional organizations.

About the Author
Brian P. Janiskee received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University and is professor and chair of the Department of Political Science at California State University, San Bernardino, where he is also a faculty member in the national security studies program. He has published several articles and books on such topics as special districts, crime policy, presidential elections, American colonial local government, and national security.

Ken Masugi received his Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research and teaches for Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Advanced Studies in American Government in Washington, DC. He is editor of Interpreting Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" (described in the American Political Science Review as representing a "revolution in Tocqueville scholarship") and coeditor of four other books on modern and American political thought. A Senior Fellow of the Claremont Institute, Masugi is currently completing a monograph on Democracy in America.
