barely revised form the 1995 fourth edition

Do you want this book? Do you have to buy it for a class? I've just compared the fourth and sixth editions and I am here to tell you that there are very few differences. Sure, there are a few important practices (rubrics) that are not in the earlier editions but all in all the older edition is so close that if you want to save yourself $100, buy the older one. Really. Almost word for word the sections that are the same (and it's 90% of the book) are unrevised. Save your money. Buy the older version. It's the same thing.

A never ending love!!!

Well this a the book I have been waiting for and Tricia Daniels out done herself again with another awesome read. This is an emotion roller coaster ride that has it moment when you don't know what to do, whether or not you want to laugh or cry or throw your kindle. For me I cried a lot, some where happy tear and other not so much. This book was the best by far in my book.

I highly recommend this book. But make sure you read the others before it, you won't be disappointed...

Perfect ending to the Ethan & Olivia saga

I have been dying for the conclusion to the Ethan and Olivia saga since the jaw dropping conclusion to Souls ReAligned. Yes, you have to read the previous books in the series to fully understand all that has transpired to get them to this point- because they've been to hell and back. Some of it was their own doing and other times it was out of their control. But the one thing that never wavered was the undeniable chemistry and love. Tricia Daniels created a magical world where the past is present and the future is now.

Olivia- she gets to me like she does Ethan...equal parts endearing and infuriating. She lets her fears get the better of her more often than not and does what she does best, runs. Thankfully Ethan is not having any of her flightiness. He is there with his strong hand and will to keep her where she needs to be; by his side.

I LOVED Ethan in this one (as if I didn't before) but he was out in all his alpha glory in Indivisible Souls. His reaction to her shocker of a surprise and the lengths he went to in order to protect Olivia had me swooning my heart out. This man has changed so much, and for the better, throughout this series. He's focused and determined to sort out the mess of his past that won't seem to let him be. Ugh- that ex of his made my jaw tick with her antics.

Everything started spiraling out of control and it leaves Olivia and Ethan's hopes of a promising future hanging in the balance. But when push came to shove it was Olivia who stood her ground. She was willing to lay it all on the line to protect the man she loves and the future that they both want. And her plan was beyond brilliant for everyone involved.

I will say that there were parts of the story that seemed a bit repetitive but it went to drive home the point of how well suited Olivia and Ethan were for one another. I also liked seeing the snippets of the struggles that they had been through in their long-told past. I can not stress enough how much I enjoyed this series from Tricia Daniels. It was different from anything else I've read. There was a great balance between the gut wrenching angst, the humor, the sexiness and the hope. Indivisible Souls is the stellar conclusion that Ethan and Olivia so richly deserved.

Indivisible Souls is book 3 of the Bound4Ireland Series. And Tricia Daniels was definitely saving the best for last. It was a beautiful conclusion to this amazing series!

Indivisible Souls picks up right where Souls ReAligned ended. I had almost forgotten how much I liked Ethan and Olivia and was quickly reminded of it.
My heart was all over the place and I felt so many emotions throughout their story. It happened only when I read a well written book. This book was well packed with drama, action, suspense, passion, deceit, angst, twists and turns, a bit of paranormal and most of all true love!

I loved Olivia’s character. Strong and funny and definitely not a pushover.
Ah… Ethan … He was still the hot temper Irish alpha male I adored all wrapped up in a sexy package. Seriously, who can resist Ethan?! I loved him, loved the vulnerability under all that strength. How he helped her heal from her past. How he became the hero she so desperately needed. But yes, things were complicated.

We did get some really hot and steamy scenes. But the story brought so much more. They truly were indivisible souls! Without each other they were just unable to survive. Ethan and Olivia's love story is one that transcended time.

Tricia Daniels delivered also wonderful secondary characters; Carter, John, Shannon, Megan, Ian, Scott, Rachel and all Carter’s family. I would love to get their stories. Especially the one of Carter…Sigh.

The entire series was so well thought out. I highly recommend it.

When Tehmina decided to rebel, the price she paid was extremely high: as a Muslim woman seeking a divorce, she signed away all financial support, lost the custody of her four children, and found herself alienated from her friends and disowned by her parents. Following the divorce, she felt she had to tell her story. When Pakistan publishers balked at the controversial nature of her manuscript, she published it herself. Very interesting book.

I liked the way authors have explained and described the tyranny and the brutality of a man, who is a strong politician. And, on the other hand, there is a woman, due to her insecrities from her family, falls for someone who is just not meant to be with her. Since its a true life story, so I would like to congratulate Tehmina Durrani for the courage she gathered, and wrote against Mustafa Kharr. Hatts off.

Excellent book

every oncologist should have a copy. I use this textbook all the time as my oncology reference, very simple and easy to read and cover all the basics and updates.

Improving

I started reading this book together with Devita's textbook since the 1998, at that time Devita's book seemed to have the upper hand. I read Abeloff's last edition while preparing for recertification together with the Devita's book. The last edition of Devita was easier to read, particularly on the basic sciences section. In this edition I didn't obviously read the whole textbook (I have another 10 years) but only a few selected chapters. I noted an improvement in writing style on this Aberloff's edition. The topics that I consult are easier to read.
For a quick update this book should be a good purchase. For continuous up dates the Uptodate software is still the one to obtain. Before buying this title, I did read the topic on tumor micro environments and that facilitates the reading.

About the Author
Krista Fink is a survivor of domestic violence and a high school teacher. She shares her experiences with her students so they will understand that it can happen to anyone, and that no one deserves to be abused. She gives presentations to medical professionals and advocates and is also available to speak to community organizations and educational institutions. She serves on the board of directors at the YWCA where she received support while recovering from her abuse, and she is active in fund raising for victims of domestic violence. Krista lives with her husband, Brandon, in West Virginia, and they are expecting their first child this year.

A serious and emotional work...

Krista's book is a valid account of a classic abuser profile and the insidious mechanism of victimization. It illustrates the many emotional battles in an effort to break free of the tormentor. For me, the most compelling part was the final escape itself, the exceptional effort of coordinating the practical side while dealing with the mental agony of committing to the split. Impassioned, poignant, and strong, I felt the writing at this particular point showed some real brilliance. A serious and emotional work, her book has much merit, especially for victims looking for validation and practical answers to deal with impossibly painful choices.

I could not put this book down. Easily it brought tears to my eyes and even helped to make sense of life. It has changed my perception on DV for the rest of my life. I know it has many other people as well, I know she will save way more than one life.

Must Read

This is a "must read" for anyone in the Social Work or Law Enforcment fields. Domestic Violence has gained some of its' much needed attention over the last few years, but it has not yet been addressed to the degree that it should. We all need to be more educated on this issue. Regardless of how you may come in contact with the victims, it is often very easy to overlook. I believe this book is very well written and helps you understand why victims of domestic violence stay with their abusers. For police officers and social workers, this book also helps identify areas to focus on if you suspect domestic violence in a relationship. It is written in such a way that I felt I was witnessing what Krista was going through. If you are a victim of domestic violence, I strongly suggest you read this book. It just may give you encouragement to either leave or seek out assistance to do so.

A badly-needed book for these bastardized times.

I came back to cycling after 20 years off, after a concentrated period of accidents that put me in a car instead. However I overcame my fears only to see that the world of cycling had changed, a lot, and not for the better in my opinion. Strangely enough my previous bike was a Bridgestone, designed by Grant Peterson, only I didn't know it. I even had a well-read old book by Mr. Peterson called "Roads to Ride" which mapped and described every worthy road around the Bay Area at the time (a book available used and still 85% accurate despite al the construction since then).

Upon returning to cycling, I was very happy to learn about Rivendell, and that I had inadvertently already experienced the work of Rivendell in a way. I love the philosophy, which is basically how people rode before everyone wanted to be like Lance or LeMond. The fact is, most of us can't be like Lance or LeMond, but when we try, we often look like idiots and don't enjoy the process.

This book is about having "fun" on a bicycle again. It's aimed at people who think that cycling is all about racing, when it's not. It's about having a bicycle as a vehicle. It's about the bicycle being practical as well as fun. We're practical with our cars...how many of us drive 2-seater roadsters as our only car? Not many, as they are very inconvenient. The book approaches bikes in the same way. If jolting around on a carbon racer in full race gear is fun to you, go at it. But for the rest of us, who like touring, commuting, who can't afford multiple bikes, or would love to spend a day on a bike without looking like Captain Spandex from Planet Strava...the book explains how you can go for nice, long, fun, enjoyable rides without the need to develop back pain, tendonitis, swamp-crotch, and forcing innocent people to see the tracings of your private parts while waiting in line at Starbucks. Many of his points had already been proven to me personally. Such as: I do go numb when wearing padded spandex, but I feel fine in regular shorts (and Ive never experienced chafing unless im wearing cotton). I have less pain in my knees when I ride regular pedals instead of click-ins. I can travel long distances faster on a more relaxed bike with wide tires due to no fatigue. Wide tires let me ride rustic old mountain roads filed with cracks and potholes or dirt. So I dove in and read the rest.

My favorite passage from the book is when he describes what a typical road bike would be like if the professionals had to have a single bike for several years, had to do the repairs and maintenance on their own, and stick with that bike. (Funny as racing used to be like that) Would they still be riding ultra-light thinwalled plastic bikes designed on the fringe of failure? Doubtful. So why should we. It's a fantastic point for those of us who aren't worried about shaving off 2 minutes on a 100-mile ride, but don't want to be stuck in a high-maintenance bike plan. For those of us that want to get comfortably home or to the campground after 100 miles, a more durable and proper bike may be required.

Some points I disagree with, but it is a book of musings, so he's entitled to his opinions as we all are. However he backs up his opinions with good reasoning. His views on helmet wear particularly. But that's an ongoing debate that will never end.

I don't own a Rivendell bike. Some reviewers on here seem to think this is a sales pitch book to get people to buy more Rivendells. The bikes they make are not mentioned in the book. Some point out contradictions in the high prices of Rivendell frames, but that is due to the niche that Rivendell has. You just cant make a high-quality lugged steel frame for less.

After re-absorbing the Rivendell philosophy, I fashioned up an old 1971 Raleigh Super Course as a commuter, very similar to the illustration on the cover of this book. Total cost was about $1000, including new wheels (with a dynamo hub), racks, upright handlebars, fenders, a nice big seat bag and a sprung leather saddle. Funny thing is, people think it's my nicest bike. It's the only bike my female friends have an interest in (take note, Captain Spandex). It looks "accessible", and has inspired quite a few peers to get back into cycling again. And, it makes for one ~really~ nice commute, no matter what the weather is like. So this book does work in that sense. And i believe that is Grant Petersen's goal, to get more happy people on bikes that they love to ride.

UPDATE: I now do own a Rivendell, purchased Winter 2016. The above-mentioned Raleigh couldn't handle the strain of a more loaded commute and a developed love of bike camping, particularly on dirt roads, so I now do own a Samuel Hillborne frame. I couldn't be happier, and expect to enjoy this frame for as long as the Raleigh frame lasted. I guess this book was more of an influence than I expected.

Best How to Book I've Read on Biking

This book has more information between its covers than any 200 page how to book I have read. I have been biking for 60+ years and have suspected that the bike retailers and manufactures were hoodwinking me into thinking that I ultimately needed a 15 pound bike if I wanted to be a "serious" cyclist. I thought that one would be better off buying the 25 pound steel bike and spending the $2000 dollars saved on a bit of liposuction. Grant Petersen put all of this into perspective in this magnificent book. He remarks that a bike is the only transportation system that is weighed without it's motor. When you add a 185 pound rider to a 15 pound bike versus a 25 pound bike the resulting saving in total weight is around 5%. You buy the racing bike and give up frame strength and longevity as well as usefulness and adaptability. I probably don't really need thirty three gears either.

Grant has given us a wonderful book with amazing insights that demystify the myths and silly thinking that have been foisted on us by an industry hell bent to send me out on Lance Armstrong's bike to buy groceries. Grant's main goal is to point out what he sees as racings bad influence on bicycles, equipment and attitudes. If you are a non racer you must read this book before visiting another bike shop.

Just Ride Baby!

I can confidently say that Grant Peterson saved my life.

Don't believe me?

Let me tell you how. I started riding a tiny hand-me-down Trek about 8 years ago. I weighed about 260 lbs and was really out of shape. I rode the tiny Trek everywhere, and found that I really loved riding. I also had an incredible amount of neck and back and shoulder pain during and after my rides. So I went into my LBS (local bike shop) and said I wanted to get a new bike. I was all prepped up to get a new carbon fiber state-of-the-art material superlight racer. LBS guy was like "um dude, you should get a steel bike, that's what we ride here." So I did. I started researching this whole steel bike thing, and came across the Riv site.

I kept riding. On my new, but still too small, 57 cm bike. I am 6'3".

I also started reading. This book is an amalgamation of all the stuff that Grant has written in the past, with some new stuff added. I found out that my bike was probably still too small. That I was still trying to become a racer. These readings helped me understand how bikes work, how I can ride safely, and how I can be a normal temperamental dude when discussing hot button issues like helmets, carbon forks, and riding in traffic. They have been invaluable.

Since I started riding (and, more importantly, KEPT RIDING) I have lost 40 pounds and kept it off, I feel healthy, I have cleared up a liver issue that was potentially fatal, and am just a generally happy and healthy guy. This liver thing was the kicker. I needed to lose the weight to make it work.

I lost the weight by cutting carbs. I learned to cut carbs to lose weight by reading Gary Taubes' excellent book 'Why We Get Fat' which was given to my wife while we were at Rivendell Headquarters riding bikes (I ended up buying the first bike that has ever fit me, what a wonderful feeling it is to have my legs tire before my back, neck , and shoulders). Were it not for that trip, or for the friendly Riv staffer giving my wife the book, which led to me reading it and dropping the weight, who knows what would have happened.

I can say that the approach to riding that Grant lays out in this book has made riding fun, interesting, compelling, and wonderful. It has allowed me to stick with it, riding my bike year round in Vermont because I WANT to, not because I feel like I need to train for centuries or learn tricks on a fixie. I ride a bike that is incredibly comfortable, allows me to see traffic clearly, and is just a total blast. All of this is because of Grant.

If you are getting into riding for the fun of it, you NEED to buy this book. Before you buy a bike. Before you go into your LBS. Before you start reading internet postings. Just buy this, read it, and just ride.

Pontius Pilate, by Ann Wroe, is beautifully written, imaginatively researched, and intricately structured. Most importantly, it provides readers with a valuable emotional experience: a chance to rediscover and redeem Pilate's famous question--"What is truth?"--in a spirit of humility and hope. A handful of small coins and one inscribed stone are the only physical evidence that Pilate existed. All of the textual sources that mention Pilate, Wroe notes, are "so wrapped in propaganda or agendas that it is difficult to detect what, if anything, may be true." But since Pilate "stands at the center of the Christian story and God's plan of redemption," Wroe persevered in her efforts to discern the profile of his life. "Without his climactic judgment of Jesus, the world would not have been saved. To have a faceless bureaucrat at the heart of all this drama was unacceptable: something had to be made of this man." The book's bold ambition, however, is not blind. "This is not a search for the 'real' Pilate," Wroe admits. "At best, all we have are glints and hypotheses." To learn about her subject, Wroe had to sacrifice most of her sympathetic impulses and shift her concentration to the elements of Roman life that she did not understand. And oddly enough, the passages in which Wroe describes her ignorance most clearly are where we begin to glimpse "a man actually walking on a marble floor in Caesarea, feeling his shoes pinch, clicking his fingers for a slave, while clouds of lasting infamy gather overhead."

Wroe takes current trends in the genre of biography one step further in this eloquent yet frustrating book, offering a reconstructed life of the Roman official who, by ordering the execution of Jesus of Nazareth but otherwise serving with little distinction, managed to become simultaneously famous and obscure. Outside the Gospels, which each bring the governor on stage for a brief if highly charged cameo appearance, there are only a few references to Pilate in contemporary sources. Where other biographers would see a historical desert, Wroe sees the tantalizing mirages that have sprung up over the centuries, from the fourth-century Acta Pilati to medieval mystery plays. She weaves these nonhistorical speculations together with well-researched accounts of first-century Roman lives, producing a shifting but suggestive portrait of an ultimately very human functionary. The writing is both precise and rich (as one might expect from the American editor of the Economist), and the insights into human character ring consistently true, but Wroe's bibliography is alarmingly scant when it comes to historical research on Jesus (who, after all, presents similar problems to biographers). And unlike Jaroslav Pelikan in his masterful Jesus Through the Centuries, Wroe often forfeits the opportunity to show how Pilate's reimagining served changing historical situations, juxtaposing quotes from mystery plays and letters from Cicero with deliberate abandon. "What did he look like? However men imagine him," Wroe writes. Readers who know the satisfactions of more conventional history will find such equivocations disappointing, but those who take Wroe's project on its own terms will find much to ponder. (Apr.)

Outside the meager information in the Gospels, we know almost nothing about Pontius Pilate. Bits of information from Philo, Josephus, and Tacitus and an inscription discovered in 1961 provide the barest historical information. In a most effective and engaging manner, Wroe (American editor of The Economist) uses a knowledge of ancient history and a variety of fictional material, including works that are more theology than biography, and weaves her sources into a seamless account, bringing the reader into the "mind" of Pilate. Beginning with his "ancestors," Wroe shows us the intellectual and social forces she believes formed Pilate. By the time she gets to his crisis over Jesus, we are prepared to understand the fuller meaning of his actions and their potential impact on him and his career. Presentation of details, such as what Pilate might have done after sentencing Jesus to death--relax in the Roman answer to a sauna--makes for fascinating reading. As long as readers don't take this as accurate history but enjoy it for as a well-written, imaginative, and creative portrait of Pilate and his times, the book serves a useful purpose. The selected bibliography will be useful for further research. Recommended for all libraries.

One of my favorite two books by any author

Ann Roe is one of the deepest and most thorough historian who has ever existed. I've bought three copies of this book so far. There is so little known about Pilate but Ms. Roe manages to find an enormous amount of detail in widely-scattered cracks. Very readable...bordering on popular...but scholarly enough to make one pause and rehash in ones' mind every paragraph. One of my favorite two books by any author.

multiple truths

Pontius Pilate is where the classical world meets the Biblical, a pagan European man in the monotheistic Middle East, the Imperial governor over a notoriously rebellious region, and a player in perhaps the most famous execution in history. "What is truth?" Pilate says in the Book of John, a retort to Jesus' claim, "The reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth." I have often thought of that conversation, wondered what Pilate really thought, how he viewed Jesus, the Jews, his job. Who was this man? What is truth?

Ann Wroe must have wondered the same thing, because this book is a 400-page exploration of Pilate in history, legend, and literature. Very little information about Pilate survives from his time: just the Gospel texts, some coins, an architectural fragment, and paragraphs from contemporary historians. To supplement this, Wroe pulls information from multiple other sources. She cites Pilate's colleagues to give an idea about what the life of a Roman governor was like. She quotes numerous texts from ancient gnostic, coptic, and early church legend books, as well as plays from the middle ages, to see how they embellished Pilate's tale. She references film and novels, and points out different locations in Europe that claimed to have a Pilate connection.

All of these sources provide multiple lenses for seeing Pilate. He is a violent oppressor, a sycophantic bureaucrat, a machiavellian conspirator, a man in over his head, a drunk, a blowhard, even a deeply apologetic convert. He's a saint in Ethiopia. Spaniards forged long-lost documents by him. His "childhood pants" were long displayed in a small German town, and, on Fridays, his ghost haunted a lake in the Alps. Because so little of Pilate is actually known, people have projected their ideas, their fears, their hatred, their idolization on him for centuries.

I was impressed with Wroe's ability to weave all these together. She takes Pilate's life, from birth to death, and explains how each text or legend describes those moments. She quotes these sources heavily, though Wroe's own writing is stylish, intelligent, and sometimes beautiful. The book does get long in the tooth in some spots, but whenever a lengthy quote from Cicero about the Roman idea of morality made my eyes glaze over, the next page featured a scene from a medieval play where Pilate steals the Holy Grail. By the end of the book, Wroe seems to take Pilate's question--"What is truth?"--and presents dozens of people's answers from throughout history, allowing us to decide.

If There Was A Real Pilate, His Life Story Exists Somewhere On These Pages

A well researched biography of the multiple Pontius Pilates that have been created in the last two thousand years. The historical record of the real Prefect of Judea is scarce. There is little we know for sure about his life but the author does a first rate job painting a picture of the possible Pilate.

My son, who does not like to read, is suddenly a reader!

That statement enough should convince you to buy one of these books as a test. I bought one book for my son, who is 11 and suffers from Asperger's. He has never been a reader and even has no interest in the Harry Potter series. He has enjoyed Encyclopedia Brown so much that he took a book on a weekend getaway with us.

These are the same books I enjoyed as a child. They do not seem to have been updated or make politically correct for today's sheltered youth. There is no objectionable or even questionable language. Encyclopedia Brown is respectful, decent and helpful. I am delighted that my child, who has had no love for reading, read the first of these books in one day.

Our 7 year old grandson really enjoyed this book! He is a reluctant reader so we've been trying different books series out to hook him into reading more. I remembered this series was popular a while back so we tried it and he loved it! We'll be checking out more of these.

What's not to like? It's Encyclopedia Brown, the books I enjoyed too many years ago to count. I wanted to see if there were kindle versions. There were so I bought one. Kids these days should read them, they show how to think.
